By looking at the ratings above, it seems the statement that Douban raters are tough is true. However, my curiosity went further by comparing the ratings with Kdramas. So, I ran the top 10 ranked Kdramas on MDL as of November 22, and compared them with Douban ratings. Below are the results:

On MDL, the ratings are 9.2 (number 1) to 9.0 (number 10). On Douban, below are their ratings with raters' numbers:
Move to Heaven = 9.1 <100K
Hospital Playlist = 9.5 (0.2M)
Flower of Evil = 8.7 (0.1M)
Hospital Playlist 2 = 9.5 <100K
My Mister = 9.4 (0.1M)
Prison Playbook = 9.4 (0.1M)

Meanwhile, there are MDLers complaining that Kdramas are overrated on this site... ;D

Moreover, the army of Douban raters is way larger than MDL raters, as the latter numbers are at maximum about 50K only.

Interesting article! I watched Cdramas the most, however, I've never paid attention to Douban rating. Therefore, the statement that 'Douban raters are tough' intrigues me. As I'm also as curious as you are, I ran the top 10 ranked Cdramas on MDL as per November 22, and compared them with Douban ratings.

I saw Gokusen is only rated 8.1. Was it higher before? Probably the newer dramas are also more popular on MDL. Also, the MDL population is predominated by young women who prefer romance genre ;D

Yeah, you're right. Qing dynasty dramas not really popular because some people don't like seeing bald guys. For me it's depend on who is in it, but again, I prefer not seeing bald guys either, lol. Qing dynasty dramas not always based on history either.
