The motivation behind Xiaowei, as told by multiple narrators and characters, is his inability to let go of his obsession with love. The person who once gave their life to save him had long since died, yet Xiaowei remained trapped in the debt of that love. Even his surname suggests indebtedness. He could not move on, and instead kept searching through reincarnations, trying to reclaim something that no longer existed.
This is no doubt one of the show’s central themes: love turning into obsession, and devotion becoming imprisonment.
A major piece of foreshadowing comes when Xiaowei warns:
“Perhaps you, too, will follow in my footsteps. Don’t. It is not worth it.”
And that is exactly what happens.
As the story progresses, Lu Wu Yi gradually becomes someone who cannot let go either. Her love for Ji Ling pushes her to challenge fate itself. What begins as affection transforms into sacrifice and desperation. She does not simply want to save Ji Ling. She refuses to accept a world where he must die.
Ji Ling, on the other hand, represents the opposite side of tragedy. He loves just as deeply, but is caught between the duty of being Long Shen and his love for Lu Wu Yi. He believes the only way to protect others, and to protect Lu Wu Yi, is through self sacrifice.
However, unlike Xiaowei, who was always too late to reunite with the one he loved, Lu Wu Yi and Ji Ling are ultimately given another chance. They are able to reunite in a different world, even if they may no longer remember who they truly are.
And in the end, that becomes the answer to the question Xiaowei once asked.
Maybe all the struggle, all the pain, and all the sacrifice… was truly worth it.
After finishing watching the last episode, I said this at the start, and after finishing Veil of Shadows, I still feel the same way.
Time travel and looping timelines, when used in a story like this, always leave certain questions unanswered. Not every paradox can be explained, and not every detail will make logical sense.
But even with that, the show still managed to tell a beautiful story about love, obsession, loneliness, and sacrifice.
Each character faced those emotions in their own way. Some tried to save the person they loved. Some were consumed by longing. Some accepted loss, while others kept resisting fate.
Maybe with a show like this, the best way to watch it is not to focus on realism, but on what the story is trying to portray.

I believe JL would not have been alive in the first place. To even meet LJ or WSG
He would have committed suicide back in the cave with his A'Wu.
In no world can those two really exist without the other. LWY was created specifically to get close to JL, but JL is also alive because LWY existed
but in a world where there no LWY, Hanba would just hand over the power. With out losing control and causing the drought
