You might think that this movie was abit mundane or the storyline not grand, but I'm sure that's what's intended. It's about living with dignity and normalcy as a different person in society, so it's not supposed to be grand, it's a story about aclimitization and self acceptance, the movie does this in a very non pretentious way and there's alot of merit in that. I love this film, it's simple yet powerful.

I think it's cuz of the fact that the ccp censors the media in China immensely and regulates what the audience will see and what it can't. I fault to see how it can be propoganda when it's something that actually happened unless they distort facts in their favour.
