There are different types of smart ppl, she is street smart. She is ignorant because of the environment she grew up in. She is independent, can think for herself and her sister, can defend herself and others, she IS smart. She hid her sister in a basket which if Ning'er had not gotten out of, she was safe. When someone hasn't experienced life outside of the ordinary, they would not know about life outside of the ordinary. It is not that she cant learn, she is not silly. She is simply unaware, and there is no shame to it. Everyone starts somewhere. She is smart enough to learn and to know her shortcomings. She is exploring herself, her capabilities and all that this world has to offer. TBH this is the most honest, most candid representation of someone who is smart just inexperienced. Experience can be learnt, being smart can't.
