Director Xie Ze: "We didn’t want to turn The Story of Pearl Girl into an 'idol drama'. I wanted to make it grounded and as realistic as possible. For example, when Duan Wu was a child in the pearl slave cave, the show doesn’t delve too much into the suffering she endured there. Although the pearl slave cave is dark and cruel, once the scene transitions, it moves into the gorgeous setting of the pearl pavilion.
Through the contrast between these two scenes, we want the audience to realize that while the nobility live in an environment of peace and luxury, slaves endure a life of extreme misery."
