Overall Defendant was enjoyable but too much of a slog to get through. Like many S. Korean series, this one could have benefited by being edited down to fewer episodes.
Great review. It was better written than the show or maybe it's the terrible subtitles that are putting me off. In any case, you gave me a fresh perspective on the show and I may re-watch if it comes up on Netflix or Hulu with better subs.
Kim Se Jeong is hilarious.; Kim Hyun Sook & Lee Deok Hwa are great in their supporting roles too. I would never have expected such a cliched sounding plot would have me laughing out loud so much.
This movie had so much potential but ended up a disappointment. Nonetheless, the acting & production values make it entertaining enough if you don't know what else to watch in the moment. A series with a possessed person each episode with the Big Bad's arc weaved throughout would have allowed for better character development, examination of good & evil, the role of religion in our lives, etc.
Unlike most reviewers & commenters, I’m enjoying this series immensely (just past the halfway mark) and am really pleased that I stuck with it. The villain’s vengeance seems disproportionate and ill-targeted, but trauma can make one into a twisted individual. His performance as well as the male lead’s is excellent.
Episode 3: Does anyone know why Sae Bom forced her way into the neighbor’s apartment instead of calling for some kind of back up when infection was suspected? Bad writing?
I liked the first three episodes or so and the bucolic baby-making interlude, but that’s about it. For a detective, Gu Reum has no poker face, can’t lie to save her baby’s life, and just showed terrible judgement throughout. Then her characterization fell apart even more toward the end. The supporting characters on the good side were sweet & sometimes fun. With the exception of the Captain, the villains weren’t fleshed out, so I didn’t care about any of them except Yoo Na.
Thankfully, it was “only” 12 episodes and was interesting enough.
I usually enjoy action movies, but the violence in this one felt especially gratuitous. I couldn’t finish the film, however I may give it another go if I’m in a different frame of mind. The actors are some of my faves so it would be a shame to miss out on their performances.
What kind of half-assed BS is this? Edge of the seat with how f@ing stupid all the characters are. Don’t police have interpreters and social workers to help interview disabled witnesses? Don’t they have CCTV in the stations? The actors did a good job with an absolutely terrible scenario.
I feel inexplicably bereft at the end of this series. I’ll miss all the characters but especially Gang Jae, Boo Jung & her father.
Boo Jung & Jung Soo are more like brother & sister bonding over the loss of their father. I like to think that they call it a day, become good friends, & go find their true loves.
