The country boy in the photograph

Based on the novel translation, Moth’s backstory is the key to his entire personality. Here’s the full picture:---Who he is now:Moth is 24, a freelance artist/illustrator living alone in a Bangkok condo. He does commercial work—comics, mascots, logos, graphic design—but he used to be a serious painter. He’s tall, slender, fair-skinned, with dark eyes and a cold, sarcastic exterior. He pushes people away, hates birthdays, and has spent over ten years celebrating alone.
Childhood:
He was a sickly child—always catching colds, fainting in the sun, allergic to rain. He grew up determined to overcome his weaknesses and became healthier, even athletic. But the feeling of being “weak” stayed with him.
Art college ;
Mes (the core wound):Moth studied art in university. He was talented, painting contemporary/abstract work with raw emotion. That’s when he met Mes, a senior he deeply admired. Mes mentored him, praised his honesty, and told him he was “special.” Moth fell in love.
The Valentine’s Day rejection:
Six years ago, Moth gathered the courage to give Mes a rose on Valentine’s Day. Mes coldly dismissed him: “I don’t really care about this kind of thing.” He didn’t take the rose, didn’t even turn to look at Moth properly, and left him standing there humiliated. The text says: “That was the day Moth stopped being the same person.”
Aftermath:
Mes went abroad and started dating someone with an “incredible profile,” which made Moth feel even more inadequate. He stopped painting seriously, turned to commercial work to make a living, and built thick walls around his heart. He became cold, blunt, and pushed everyone away before they could reject him. He started hating Valentine’s Day and birthdays. He never let anyone into his condo or his bed.
Pan and the manipulation:
His only close friend was Pan, who secretly loved him for years. Moth knew but didn’t confront him because he didn’t want to hurt him. Later, Moth used Dean to make Pan give up on him—a manipulative move that shows how broken and desperate he was to avoid emotional messes.
How Dean changes it:
Dean becomes the first person Moth brings home, the first he sleeps beside, and the first he paints again. Moth eventually realizes the painting he made by the river was Dean, not Mes. His backstory is one of rejection, self-doubt, and walls—and his arc is learning to trust and let love in.
In short: Moth is a deeply wounded artist who was humiliated by his first love, convinced he wasn’t good enough, and spent years punishing himself by staying alone. Dean is the crazy person who finally breaks through.
