I don't have any empathy for Wang Shuo. I know this drama takes things to extremes but there's no reason good enough for disappearing for seven years only to show up and expect what? He's a bitch who enjoys making others unhappy.
Wait. So you're making these sweeping statements to support a position you hold just because you don't like the look chosen for the character on this particular actor? Is that it? Because you sidestepped my argument.
"We have no intention of occupying public resources and, to prevent the focus of public opinion from being diverted, we earnestly ask the public not to pay excessive attention to this matter and to allow Ms. Zhao Lusi ample space to rest and recover."
This last sentence is such a dog whistle. I've worked in PR and that is just nasty. They're setting themselves up as the reasonable party who doesn't want to be messy in public and that reference to Zhao Lusi's health is a basically saying she's crazy. That alone tells me what kind of agency it is. I hope she's ready for a fight because they're going to drag her through the filth before this is over. Already seen some comments here (and blocked the commenters) and can only imagine what is going around on Chinese social media.
The cast in interviews always say they prefer to see this series as Man's Love or a gay series, they don't want…
I want to agree with you so badly but I am a realist and know for a fact that we're not going to achieve inclusivity under capitalism. And rather than wait for something that's not going to come, or try to convince people to accept queerness as normal, might as well create media that represents us. In my country people petitioned the government to revoke the license of a satellite TV service because there is too much "gayness" in their content. And by the way, this was over queer characters in a mainstream show. Sorry love, but the people don't want to change.

I disagree. We only have these genres because heterosexuality is treated as the norm and everything else gets leftovers. Until media is fully inclusive, there will continue to be a need for BL, etc.
People really need to learn the different between "I don't like the characters this actor has played", "this actor is typecast" and "this actor is bad at their job".
Watched the first episode and I'm going to wait for it to end so I can binge it.
I hope this series doesn't shy away from or try to blunt the effects of capitalism and the far West's involvement in a lot of the shit that went down in the SEA in that time. Calling this a BL feels reductive imo. There are no boys here.
"No man wore his hair that girly in a 60's rock band." Wrong. Without thinking too hard, Led Zeppelin? And that's a popular band. Sure I can find ten more. Rock was an alternate culture before it became mainstream so if short hair was the norm, you'd most likely find a rocker with long hair. Also referring to Tanwa's hair as "girly" tells me all I need to know.
