They did. It's how it's been officially promoted in South Korea. Take any Korean article speaking about this series before it aired in August and it's promoted as a Romantic Comedy. It's also the tag you'll find on namu wiki. I know. I've checked.
But do you realise there is possibility of drama having multiple genres like romcom (first 5 Eps), Slice of life,…
This show had been advertised as a rom com'. A show being a melo doesn't mean it's not going to have some humor in it. It's not because you're watching a thriller that there's no romance nor humor in it either and so on and so forth.
BUT there's a dominant genre and the issue here is that the dominant genre is slice of life not rom com' yet the show is tagged here and in South Korea as a Rom Com' and a Family show.
They're balancing the tone right for a slice of life but definitely not for a rom' com. That's the point of my comment. This being said, I've made peace with it and I feel most complaining should also make peace with it now. However, I do feel like these tags should be changed because it's misleading and bound to make people dissapointed. In a couple of months, some naive souls are going to want to watch this show, the comment section will be mostly empty and they're going to fall into the trap all of us fell into unless they read reviews... which I personally never do before watching a show because I feel it tints my perception of the show.
I recently dropped "Doctor John" for the same reason. It was tagged "Mystery Thriller" on Viki... Unfortunately when I finally watched it, it took me 6 episodes to understand this was not a thriller but 100% pure medical drama ( and I HATE medical dramas so I only bother with shows in medical settings when the focus in not on the medical stuffs). I checked later episodes just to be sure... and yes MEDICAL ONLY, the only mystery was about some dude that died which led the ML to prison but this was not even a mystery, it was just an information that was given only at the end ( I mean by that, that there was no investigation involved or whatever). And let me tell you, I was PISSED. Again, misleading tags.
I blame mostly all the backlash on tvN for lying to the audience. Also... I should have known Jung Hae In just likes melodramas, so sure for him a slice of life is literally a rom com' next to his usual projects. I'll never trust him again 😅😅😅
Can we just remove the Rom-Com' tag? This is not a rom-com', this is a slice of life. This is so misleading. I…
RIP ex-fiancé.... But honestly, you should be happy. If you had married her you would have always wondered if she had any feelings for Seung Hyo. You'd never be sure you were n°1 so as sad as it is for you, it was a close call. Get with somebody whose heart belongs to you and you only and not somebody who stays with you by default and gratitude. You deserve better though I'm still pissed you didn't tell her family, maybe the outcome of your relation would have been different. You got your chance but that bad choice ruined it... Not your fault... But if she truly was into you, she would have stayed.
This is not a rom-com', this is a slice of life. This is so misleading. I feel cheated because I signed up for a rom com'. Now, I'm not saying the show is not good. I still like it ( my God episode 10 WAS HEAVY) but you can't blame people from complaining when the show doesn't deliver on what it promised. I've checked Namu Wiki just to see if it was advertised the same to Koreans and yes, it's Romantic Comedy there as well. I might have slightly agreed for the first 4 episodes and honestly and I'm not sure it could even be categorized as a rom com' then but now it's very clear it's not and won't be in the future given what's hinted at for Sung Hyo's mom. Other tears are coming.
Maybe it's because Rom Com's are easier to sell than slice of life to gain audience... But you should always be honest with your viewers... Otherwise you're going to get lots of complaints AND RIGHTFULLY SO. I'm the type of person that tend to stay away from this genre unless I'm really in the mood to watch one, because otherwise I wouldn't rate said show unfairly.
This comment section has become this way because they lied and people who still want to see a rom com' obviously consider that this show sucks because it's not. For a Rom Com' it SUCKS. For a slice a life though, it's a fairly good show: It tackles heavy topics without being too heavy about it and making its viewers depressed. So sure maybe from ep 11 to 16, Seung Hyo and Seok Ryu's relationship is finally going to go upward but you know whose problems we're going to deal with from now on... and you've seen the preview and heard Seun Hyo's voice. You know what's coming up. Rom Com' be damned.
Do I hate this show: No. In fact I really LOVE it. Do I think people are being mean and are spreading unnecessary hate in the comment section? No, I don't. We were lied to, they have a right to complain.
HOWEVER, now that we definitely know this is not a Rom' Com. It's time to get over it, or drop this show altogether in you're allergic or are simply not in the mood for heavy topics.
I remember the hype back then! "The best BL ever!" No, not by far! I dropped the first episode 4 times: it was…
Glad I'm not the only one. I think the cinematography was helped A LOT by the beautiful scenery ^^ We'll see for the sequel though... I'm planning to watch just after I've finished rewatching this ^^ I hope that like you, I'll like it more.
This thread has gotten terrible. I was hoping people would calm down after a couple of days and you know give positive or negative criticisms regarding the show without getting into the usual personal attacks... But I've had it. I'm out of here. I'm going to keep watching this quietly. Less time on social networks, forums, comment sections whatever, more time to do something else. Good watching to you all anyway. It's more fun when we interact between fans but so be it.
Dr Romantic 1 and 2 is the Anti-House Zen Master. Same sort of character study without the asshole but lots of…
Your comment made me laugh ^^ Funnily enough, "Live Up to Your Name" is a drama I dropped after only 2 episodes when it aired... And I do love both leads ^^
Dr Romantic 1 and 2 is the Anti-House Zen Master. Same sort of character study without the asshole but lots of…
Thank you for the information (though I don't understand what's an Anti-House Zen Master). Definitely going to stay away from Doctor Romantic then ( I grew up while ER was airing so my trauma runs deep, I'm just literally completely utterly fed up with the genre).
Hospital Playlist seems more like my jam though still in a medical settings however... but I'll be checking it out given how popular it is and the fact you mentioned it's more character driven.
Well I'm currently re-watching it. Is the end less off-putting on a rewatch... Currently reaching the end of episode 2 and MY GOD how could I have forgotten how much of a shitty personality Teh had?
Team Bas all the way. I'll be forever saddened this ship didn't sail... And I'm the type of person who ALWAYS stick to the main pairing to avoid heartbreak and it's the only case where no matter how much I try to reason with myself I just can't be behind that pairing. Oh Ew is a sweetheart and Teh is a toxic bundle of pride and toxic jealousy. Not cute. I think my main issue is that it's usually fun to see petty jealousy onscreen, I luuuuurved it, but Teh hurts Oh Ew every time and it's REALLY annoying. I just want him to go to hell.
happy ending? I am contemplating whether to watch this or your name engraved herein but i discovered the latter…
Depends on your point of view... For me it's one of the very few drama where the "happy ending" is not a pleasant one. I'm currently rewatching episode 2... and all the emotions I felt back then are coming back and they're still the same. So if your question is happy ending as in both ML get together? The answer is yes. Now is it truly a happy ending, I think it really depends on how you see these characters.
My bet is that that this drama got a 8.1 ratings on MDL in spite of its quality compared to most BL dramas from that dilemma. For me, it's not a HE. I was planning on re-rating it up... But I think that I'm going to stick with the initial ratings of 8.5 that I gave 3 years ago.
It's getting too graphic for comfort (currently in the middle of episode 8)... I was planning on watching another Taiwanese thriller after that one, but I think once I've finished, I'm going to stay away from the genre for at least a month... I might only stick to romantic comedies for that matter. I still think the story is great but the amount of violence shown in episode 8 is above my tolerance level. Obviously it's an Asian show on Netflix... I don't understand why they always need to get this violent whenever these shows are exclusively produced for Netflix or Disney +. It doesn't bring anything of value to the story. I prefer when we spend time with our prosecutor instead of giving too much screentime to sickeningly gross and disgusting individuals.
FINAL EDIT: The actor playing the mastermind was amazing! I couldn't bear to look at his face in the second half of the series and had to space my watching of each new episode because of how much I HATED him. Overall, it was a pretty classic thriller served by amazing performances by the whole cast. But a bit too dark for me, I didn't like the outcome with the mastermind... I thought It was a bit too easy for him so that's a little minus... Another little minus for the excessive violence which I felt wasn't always necessary. Overall, I thought it was a great drama... But there's no way I'm going to rewatch it, too much for my blood pressure. Final ratings: 8.5
I think it's the past. just wait a week for results 🥲
It's not. Quoting myself here:
" So I rewatched the preview... Previews can be misleading BUT:
1. We see Seok Ryu getting out of the cooking school with her new friends wearing a certain outfit. 2. Meeting her ex with the same outfit and looking at the brochures to study cooking abroad he brought her. 3. When she takes the ring, the ring is actually left on the same pamphlets... and she tries it out siting on the same bench with him... needless to say same outfit.
So... It's fair to say that we can assume that the proposal thing is not a flashback at all... THIS BEING SAID, it doesn't mean she's thinking about it seriously. Her mentioning it in the preview, might just be part of a conversation she's having with Mo Eum for instance. And I'm betting her trying it out the ring is just some misleading tricks from the writers: " Oh, I just wanted to see how it looked on my hand" before giving it back. "
I totally recommend the tv show then. The acting and everything is so well done and wow the crying scenes?? Just…
Yeah definitely planning to watch it by next month at the latest. I was waiting for the show to finish and see opinions before trying it out, but the few comments I've seen are like yours... People seem to have liked it.
I'm curious how they'll make it believable that the FL loves the ML more than her ex (if that's still the goal),…
I hope she has a good explanation for hiding things but it's obviously not a matter of feeling comfortable with her ex...He just knows and that's it. I mean are we watching the same drama? She's been literally a shadow of herself ever since that dude came back. All that spunk is gone and she's all tame instead of literally telling him to f*** off. If that doesn't scream "uncomfortable" I don't know what does.
I'm curious how they'll make it believable that the FL loves the ML more than her ex (if that's still the goal),…
She didn't choose him. He knows she had cancer, the ML doesn't, so obviously she chose to go to the hospital with her ex so that the ML is kept in the dark regarding her cancer.
