I think it's a censorship rule, because in all Chinese dramas the women cross-dressing always look 100 % like women, make-up and everything. In other countries like Taiwan they make it more convincing. So I think the censorship rules probably require it. Chinese censorship rules also state that they can't have feminine male characters, at least for a male lead.
Story worked out, but it was difficult to watch when the ML and some other cast members looked liked they had done too many plastic surgeries. I don't want to be offensive and I know it's a personal choice, but I can't help that seeing it makes me feel uneasy. If someone has seen multiple versions of this, can you recommend me one where the ML has a natural look?
I usually don't like dumb FLs, but this one did it somehow differently, so that I did not mind and all and actually liked this drama a lot. Maybe it was because she was so honestly exactly like that, not knowing anything, so it just created comedy. She did not try to be or pretend to be smarter. If you are a fan of absurd comedy, I can definitely recommend this one!

Sadly the FL just gets worse and worse. At ep 5 I still thought she's okay, but now I'm on ep 26 and I just can't stand her at all. The only things that keep me going are fast-forwarding, the ML and the comment section in Viki. When the FL appears, the comments go: "Not her again" :D I've read that it changes around ep 30 so I'm going to hang in until there. But I agree, Ester Yu would have fit this role better. Though personally I got bored with LGIEF and dropped it.

Yes that might be possible, that the character was supposed to be a bit of a parody of Bai Lu's characters, and that's why it felt like her. It's interesting that so many made this connection.
And LYT totally plays it casual, not dignified or calm. What I was trying to say was exactly that I don't feel her looks fit that kind of behaviour, and I would rather see her playing some dignified and calm character. Like she maybe did in LBFAD.
Though I have to say I'm now in ep 26 and so annoyed with the FL I think I wouldn't empathize with her whoever played her :D

I don't mean that she's not beautiful enough or that her acting is not good enough. I mean that for the way the character behaves I just feel would fit a different looking actress. Maybe someone who looks more childish, or naive or a very innocent look. And then would just scheme but get away with it because she looks so innocent :D LYT looks like someone dignified and calm. Of course in real life people's looks don't match their personalities like that either, but in drama world they often do. So even if she's really like that, when I'm watching it's difficult for me to feel that this is the character doing this and that. The mismatch reminds me that she's an actress hired to do this role, and that makes it harder for me to immerse in the drama.
Looking at LYT's list I know I've seen her in Love Between Fairy and Devil, but I don't remember her at all. And I've seen like one episode of Dt. Appledog's Time, but it bothered me that they changed Appledog's actress so I put that one on hold and it's been there a few years. But after this drama I will definitely remember her.

How interesting that you had the same thought! I wonder if it's her acting style, or maybe scriptwriter + directed wanted Bai Lu for the role first and it was written/directed to fit her. I also have not really watched Li Yi Tong before, I've only seen her briefly (one support role and one main role from a drama I dropped soon) and did not remember her.
