I read the spring scene. Here is what happened:

Very shortly after the spring scene (maybe two or three days later), she finds out the truth: they are not married and the ml had been deceiving her. She is upset! The ml’s attitude was to tell her to get over it and for them to plan their future. He did not grovel. He got even upset when she left him without saying goodbye. He can’t go after her because of the war, but he is mad, upset and sad. He sent his spies to monitor her every move. He is in a foul mood and misses her like crazy. When he is able to leave and can no longer take the separation, he goes after her with mariage on his mind. He is shameless and tries to seduce her every change he gets. The fl gives in to passion. The deed is done again and again.

In reality, he is taking revenge against her or possibly her brother or a member of her family (can’t remember the details); he even takes her v-card and completely ruins her reputation in the process. She finds out the truth on the day of his wedding or engagement party to another woman — it was all part of his plan, except he had by then falling in love with her (but still went along with his plan). I don’t remember if he did marry the other woman but the fl’s logic and actions afterwards were so frustrating that I almost threw the book in the garbage.

He started this crazy and complicated deception because he wanted to use her as bait. Now that Lu Wen has been pardoned, why is he still holding her instead of releasing her (he can’t do it because he is falling for her, and not because he views her as his enemy). She is no longer bait, which was his original plan to begin with. Now he keeps adding layers and layers of deceptions. The fl may turn on him, sure, but aside of her being mad/upset/heart-broken/feeling betrayed/hurt, he would not think that she would retaliate like a bandit. He doesn’t know her real identity.
