Because all XL actions will be conditioned by her confession, she said she can’t fall in love with him because he is not suitable for her, for all the reasons, he is a guerrilla general, their families are enemies, so XL won’t let her know the things he do for her out of love. She will fall in love with him anyway, but she will think he does not love her until the very end.
And that is it, XY statement in ep 19 will determine all XL actions in the future, he must protect her, but he must not get in her dreams, so he will never let her know all the things he does for her. Ep 19 was the checkpoint for XY and XL, I hope everyone can understand that.

Foxes and Demons are not gender oriented. As XY said to XL, for them there us no man and woman, just make and female, is something more natural and not exactly carries all society rules that genders carry for the Gods like XY and Xuan. That is why XY blushed when saw Jing, although she is with male appearance she carries the gender difference rules in her head, Xuan is the same, XL and Jing does not care as much.

The flower gives command power over Xuan family’s army. He wanted XY to have it and be protected because he knew Jing was weak. Xuan would accept XY marrying other man but he felt Jing was too weak and that is why he opposed it and only accepted it if she had the flower aka army command.

Basically using XY to get support from Jing clan and Fenlong clan. He purposely let them get close to her and lose her because she falls in love with Jing in the process.

He really is, there are many points in the novel that XY gives away that she would choose XL over Jing if they were not Romeo and Juliet: 1- She asks XL if there was no GongGong, if she was the one that had saved him in the past, how would they be today; 2- When XL takes her to travel in the sea, she asks him to stay but he takes her back to her home; 3- When he asks her if there was only Jing and she passed out to not answer under the truth poison because she thought he didn’t love her and she would be humiliated; 4- When, after Jing comes back, she asked Xuan to let XL live; 5-When she fallen in despair discovering XL was dead, even not knowing what he did for her; 6- When she is in comma and hears everything XL says and does for her, she wants to be with him but he goes away before she wakes up and takes her to her home...so, there were many moments, really, that showed how much she loved him but they could never be together so she buried deep. If the drama shows their story like it was in the novel, I don’t think anybody will get over it, it is really like Romeo and Juliet but even more sad because they can’t openly show their feelings.

Yes, I didn’t see it as bad choose, I’m happy for her, I care for her character. But as a reader, it wasn’t the kind of ending that makes me feel amazing after reading because her story with XL was much more dramatic and emotional.
