What's missing? THERE IS NO TENSION AT ALL! It's missing tension. Because they did not build the story. The just rush to the cool part, but shoot all the scenes like crap.

They say male celebrities fans are toxic but looks like this time, Xu Kai fans were right. This drama is a waste of his time and talent. His role is nothing else but an adorement to support Zhou Ye's character.

I don't mind what character or personality they're supposed to play but it is not even clear what the hell was going on, like why the hell was she there and why is she a suspect. If he's suspecting then HOW the F*ck did he know? The director is just dumb and unprofessional, the FL's acting is also just as bad.

That's not the point, some marketers like to compete Xianxia vs Historical. That's not related here. It's about a character trying to plot a scheme and the way it should get protrayed and how the scenes should be shot. Not just having a FL blowing flute magically to make a horse do the work, then ML seeing through her plans without any reason at all! I honestly think he does not, he leaves his works for honest reviews but competitors do not play the game honestly. However, I'm sure Zhou Ye markets like a stupido but her horrible acting probably couldn't help no matter how much she markets. She was once very amazing in Scent of Time and that's about it, I cannot stand her in anything else and her marketing made me lose total respect.
To be fair, this drama is also very problematic. The director, screenwriter, cameraman, props, places, etc. are all very unprofessional.
They told the FL's story within a few seconds, and then they picked a spooky song but the way Zhou Ye acts and dressed are not even spooky and mysterious one bit! Xu Kai is also aging and outgrowing the naughter mister snobby roles, I don't mind him playing these roles again but this production overall is just bad. There's no chemistry between the leads. All they made him do is act snobby and unlikeable. They try their best to make Zhou Ye cool but she is not either. When the leads first met, it is not even clear why the hell Zhou Ye was there and what her goal was, what was she trying to do and what the eff was he suspecting her for and how the hell was she even suspicious, all he did was being snobby at her and she pretended to act cool robot who doesn't care what he's doing. It's just dumb. They are only rushing to get things done.
Then when she was using the horse to burn the family. Same thing, rushing. Felt nothing about her. She did not come off cool or special, there's nothing wow about her skills.
A better example to learn from would be like TTEOTM when the Male lead used some power to make crows attack during a wedding, we can feel the ML's anger and the shots were done very dramatically. It made us feel like his magic skills are really something not to mess with. Zhou Ye? Nothing more than FL's halo, she has some skills bc of her halo only. We can't even feel where and why ML is attracted or pitying her. Their cat and mouse game is not thrilling but childish.
