The scene where he drinks to poison and she screams, "NO!!!!" gave me the chills. I love when he said, "I didn't save you from that nunnery just to watch you die now." I LOVE HIM!

I'm thinking it's because the show doesn't glorify his behavior, nor does it portray the FL as a Mary Sue. She's not perfect. The show does a good job of showing how she's trying her best, but she's very naive (and yet trying not to be at the same time). She's kinda down on herself (worthiness, not seeing herself as being on his "level"). I think two scenes really made a huge difference to her character and raising the quality of the show: 1. When she was buying bread and thinks to herself, "When a person's sincerity is treated with distain / lightly, all you can feel is embarrassment; it feels like a thorn when I breathe." <--- That's some extremely self-aware inner dialogue, and it's a universal feeling / relatable for all of us, no matter if it's a romantic relationship or a friendship or whatever kind of relationship. 2. When she told her friend that she wasn't mad about being punished for her mistake at work, but she was also upset with Luke for punishing her for her mistake. Both things were true at the same time. She didn't want special treatment, but when she didn't get special treatment it really hurt her feelings (coming from Luke). It makes her flawed, but that's so relatable.
Luke is also not perfect, but they don't glorify his behavior; in fact, they lean into how incredibly thoughtless and arrogant he is, shining a light on how his pride is incredibly hurtful and destructive. 1. When he tells her she's delusional after coming back from the ski trip 2. When she says "Happy New Year" and he tells her to check on his fish 3. When he gives her the bag and expects her to be grateful 4. When he says, "You left your bag at my place on purpose" and then never apologizes for that. None of those situations/behaviors are at all defensible, they're so obviously hurtful (to everyone but Luke because of his stupid pride).
I think that's why this show is so different from the usual toxic ML and submissive FL. She's not becoming less interesting / a doormat; she's growing stronger with each episode. Likewise, he's not just being a jerk and always getting his way. He's growing softer and trying harder (but still making mistakes).
They're both struggling and suffering and it's so much fun to watch. :-)

My dude in dramaland. Feminism means equality for men and women. Rabidly wanting equality seems like a good character trait. Chauvinism means aggressive belief that one's own group, nation, sex, or race is inherently superior to all others.

In his defense (sorta)... I think he's used to women falling all over themselves with him and so the fact that she doesn't is really confusing. His own mother told him he had a weird/bad personality. He's going to have to change on a fundamental level if he wants to be worthy of her. He doesn't have to be perfect, but he has to try being less prideful and entitled.
