Indeed good subs should be easy to read quickly and not bogged down by unnecessary detail. I didn't mean to knock the Croton subs but even though I didn't watch all of the VV subs, I saw enough to notice it flows better and better conveys the nuances. I just wanted to highlight it is a quality effort because it is exceedingly generous of you and the VV team to do it and do it so well. It takes an incredible amount of time, esp getting the timing right and deserves to be properly appreciated. 👏👏👏
UGH. I can’t decide if I should just wait for all the episodes to release next week rather than watching it…
I will just watch as they drop. The last 2 should just be pretty much a long winded wrap up for the gazillions of characters they dropped into this drama. Most of the good stuff should happen in the next 6.

Yeah plus in their own ways her new in-laws are just as big nightmares if not worse. But she tolerates them bc now she is a low status divorcee whereas she treated Xiao Lu's family like she was too good for them and if she inhales too deeply when they are in the room she may catch something... I think this show is very well done from so many aspects but her anger towards Xiao Lu and his family is disproportionate to what they did to her.

This fan sub from what I saw is slightly better than Croton’s bc the fan subber’s command of English is better. Fan subs can be a lot better than official subs. In fact Croton used a fan sub for TMOPB on their YouTube channel. In TBW, in more complicated stuff the fan subber more fully and effectively captures the essence of the dialogue whereas the Croton subber missed the mark. I point you to Shunde’s 3 requests in the very first episode. There are other small differences that are not as obvious but so far the official sub is quite good.
As for names of places, like names of people they shouldn't be translated - just like we don’t translate Yun He and Chang Yi, we also don't translate Beijing, Shanghai or Chang'an. It’s a waste of time and leaving Wanhua Valley as it is makes it easier for the viewer to relate to it when it comes up in the spoken dialogue. It doesn’t speak to the quality of the subs or detract from it. But I have seen it translated once in parentheses (ie Wanhua (Flower) Valley) and then left as is (i.e, Wanhua Valley) going forward and I can see how you'd find that informative. If it is translated, a better translator will just use Flower Valley. Valley of Thousand Flowers is a literal and cumbersome amateur translation that reflects the lack of understanding that Chinese language is less efficient when it comes to the concept of singular and plural. The 万/wan or ten thousand is simply used to convey many flowers or plurality - the meaning is already there in Flower Valley. Just from this simple example, I can tell that the VV subber is more sophisticated but the Croton subber is no amateur and quite well versed as well. I am also watching My Sassy Princess on iQiyi and that subber for example is a total amateur and did the equivalent of translating Wanhua Valley as Wanhua Gu Valley (gu means valley). smh.
Well... don't try this at home ladies. Cause this has happened to me exactly zero times in my life. So best try not to roll down any cliffs..... bc it could be THE END.
