No Netflix. And you need a license to apply for a VPN in China, which you can only get if there is a business or academic use case. Even gmail and WhatsApp doesn't work properly in China. But most international hotel chains have VPN on their wifi so tourists don't really notice until they roam outside.

This doesn't have a romance tag so I'm guessing this is one of those serious historical dramas with a lot of politics…
Nope it’s not that historical the narrative is from a family point of view. Even romanticizes the young Zhu Di quite heavily.

Actually Koren content was very popular there and quite easily accessible until Korea pointed some missiles from the us at China 5 or 6 years ago. After that it’s much harder to get approval and there is also a fair bit of public backlash against Korean content. So for example Squid Games is only available through illegal channels but it is very popular there.

All content into China is heavily censored but some Korean dramas and foreign dramas make it into China. Iqiyi and Tencent have different content on their china sites - it is different by region. When I turn off my location services I can usually get all the Chinese content on my second phone with the China sim but most of the time I don’t bother except for Youku.

Huace/Croton owns the perpetual IP to 70pct of the dramas it produces and only sells broadcast rights to big customers that can pay millions. They are not interested in individual subscribers, they leave that to the platforms who buy the rights for 6-8 years. They have become more focused on monetizing overseas rights since overseas interest in c-dramas has been growing and Chinese platforms (their main customers) are trying to cut content cost. So now they are selling rights by individual region. That just takes a much longer time and when they are trying to do that they don’t want to make it free on YouTube or easily available for a low price bc if it is, individual tv stations and platforms won’t pay a high price for the license. It’s just about money. Tencent and iQiyi have more international subscribers than youku so they are often more willing to buy international rights. They also produce a lot more of their own content than Youku does. But even the both of them have different content for different regions bc they don’t want to pay for the rights everywhere. We are going to see more of this, especially with Youku increasingly only buying China only broadcast rights to save money. They are better off paying more for exclusive China rights than non-exclusive rights in multiple regions bc they are mainly China focused. IQiyi and Tencent have a more international strategy and even started buying Korean, Thai and Indonesian language content.

just for Allen fans here:Allen's new drama " Lan Yan Tu Ji " will be airing tomorrow . I will not discuss here…
I think this is the one he suffered smoke inhalation while filming. Terrible onset safety.

Is it just me, or did you notice that CY's voice sounded different when YH was dying in his arms at the lake cottage?…
I doubt. He is a heavy sigher and his line delivery is poor…

You know a drama is a huge success when they release merch for it. And the latest one is an ice-cream in the shape…
I am bracing myself to see a whole line of fish tailed skirts…

OMG... They look so good together, I would have wanted them together.... but the way LHQ showered so much parent…
I am not saying LHQ is more worthy bc in the end it is Yunhe’s choice and she friend zoned him long ago. I am just pointing out her relationship with Chang Yi is not yet in a good place and we don’t have that many more episodes. Since i didn’t read the book I can’t project the emotions or intent from it that didn’t make it into the drama as a result of poor execution.

Definitely more drama driven if you mean heavily factionalized by that…it’s quite watchable but not something…
Yeah it’s much more Ming Dynasty than Three Kingdoms. They are going for audience appeal over accuracy and they are speeding through all the boring aspects (war games and politics ) and focusing on the familial and personal interactions.

He acted the role of someone who can love selflessly without seeming pathetic... I hope he gets a good leading role asap.

Title The Blue Whisper: Part 1 Spoiler
Yeah, I just saw it too. I just hope the release of episodes won't be one episode a day because that would be…
If it is me and I already subscribe to the platform but its not available in my region, I feel I already "paid" for it, I don't need to pay again to watch somewhere else. I have Netflix also but mostly for Western dramas but I agree its super expensive. I keep requesting c-dramas from them bc I want them to know we want more c-dramas.

I think it’s very important for us to try to watch on legal channels bc no one is making money and if that goes on it will impact both availability and quality of content. Having said that, I personally try to pay when I can but when I can’t I watch anyway. I think it’s ok bc it’s impossible to subscribe to everything and in this case I have a China SIM card so I can get China content easily but not everyone can. So if you really want to watch it then watch the virtual voyager subbed version and then just subscribe a month to croton when it becomes available officially.

I am sure Youku won't care very much at all. As far as TBW is concerned, they already secured all the advertising…
Fingers crossed…🤞

You miss my point - I don’t see that much suffering or torture although book readers feel it a lot, it’s not really coming out. What I do see is Lin Haoqing suffering a lot and a giant misunderstanding that is blown out of proportion.

If only there is a way to tell Youku that since "Who rules the world" by Yang Yang and Zhao Luzi will be airing…
I am sure Youku won't care very much at all. As far as TBW is concerned, they already secured all the advertising and any China based viewer that wants to watch it has already subscribed - Youku doesn't have the overseas rights so they don't benefit from overseas views. They will only care about Who Rules the World if they have something else in that genre they want to launch at the same time. But to my knowledge Anle is not ready to go yet.

Yeah but as someone who didn't read the book, I can observe that how Chang Yi feels for Yunhe mostly comes from what book readers say he is going through. It doesn't really come across that strongly in the dialogue or what I observe from the acting. It is one of the consequences of diluting the couple's time together so much. And I still don't quite ship them at this late stage. I just feel like that ship never quite sailed and their relationship is not that healthy. They still keep lying to each other at this late stage... smh. And Yunhe still doesn't really believe in Chang Yi enough to work with him to achieve common goals. She just goes off on her own and forces him to live with her decisions... for all the "right" reasons??? And he does the same to her - they each are trying to impose their will on the other without agreeing common goals. I understand why but I just don't know about that... Hopefully it all comes together in the last 8 episodes but I just think the storytelling in this drama is weak.

So you're telling me that Dilreba has this plethora of fans rooting for her everywhere (and sometimes quite aggressively)…
It is being fan subbed on Virtual Voyager, though just maybe not as fast as anxious fans would like.
