They empathised with each other but in the novel Haishi and Dixu never loved each other, they both loved and hated FJM. And Dixu only loved Zizan, Tilan never made an impact on him. The novel is very open to reader interpretation. I personally am in the camp of it was actually a closet BL. FJM always chose Dixu over Haishi and the two of them even died together. Haishi was just like the surrogate through which they had a child and her character is more like a smokescreen. There isn't even a hint of kiss between her and FJM and he was actually her foster father. So it is like he raised her, groomed her, married her off to his "bosom buddy" and they had a child together.
