From what I gathered, the Dou family is an old official family in decline. The two brothers swore on their father's deathbed to restore the family prestige but they have no sons to carry on their name. Their mother is from the Cui clan but she is estranged from them and probably held on to her dowry and independence. Her mother's Zhao family are merchants which are lowest on the social hierarchy but they have some money. They move up by marrying into the Dou family and so her mother supported her father's education with her dowry. Its a common trope.

Yes indeed I think they must be taking a lot of liberties with history and mixing and matching things bc Zhu Di should be Zhu Yunwen's uncle not brother. And as you point out, Wang Zhi is much later in history and I think all the issues with piracy also should be later Ming.
