How can general Nui have so much power that he can just killed a whole bunch of people in front of everyone and…
The military had a lot of power through most of ancient China and especially when China was still a collection of warring states bc they were needed to secure the borders. Many Chinese founding emperors were generals that essentially seized the throne only to see subsequent generations lose it to their own generals or to enemy kingdoms. During those times might makes right so the emperor always has to balance the need for external security with internal security. During Tang and early Song they did that by having many generals/military commanderies but those military commanderies ended up becoming local warlords in their own areas. Later from Song onwards when China became unified, scholars who became politicians and the aristocracy gained power vs the military.

That's cool! Are you into Chinese classics and which poem was by Li Bai?
Yeah I know what you mean. My friends are a lot better than I bc they are educated in Chinese. I took classes for years but its not the same. My business Chinese is very good bc I use it all day but on the classics I am a lot spottier.

The imperial exam system started during Sui dynasty and continued on to Qing dynasty. It is true that it gained wide traction during Song but it had been there throughout most of Chinese history. It was a way for emperors to dilute the power of the nobility in the court by bringing in new blood that was smart to challenge them.

@PeachBlossomGoddess It also uses more idioms than the usual CD. Love the idiom used in Ep16.
I don't watch previews. Which idiom was it?

I had to read some of the classics and poems when I was learning Chinese but tbh they are not my forte. I think Li Bai's poems were quoted at least 3x so far in the drama, the most recent by Ji Yingtao.

During that time in history, the military was extraordinarily powerful and the military commissions were a law unto themselves. This was one of the things that led to the downfall of Tang dynasty. The founding emperors were all generals themselves and that is how they rose to power but they never reformed this system which led to military commissions seizing power. The Anlushan Rebellion was probably the bloodiest example of this during Tang.

Lol - what is truly funny is the idea that my ratings should reflect your impressions. 🧐That should be your rating.😉

This script is surprisingly well written, sprinkled liberally with poems from Li Bai and other great poets. Li Bai was the greatest poet that lived during Tang dynasty and is considered one of China's greatest poets.

Another episode of YJL &JYY Supporting each other
I like that they both have limits to their power. It makes their struggles seem more real.

Are you watching in Mandarin? The actors native language is Cantonese
William is a native Canto speaker. His Mando is ok but not good enough for him to dub himself. That's why I always find his acting a bit lacking in his other dramas. But he has impressed me here bc he is clearly much more in his comfort zone speaking his own language.

Anyone knows who is behind Niu girl? Someone more powerful must be there for her to be that arrogant, any guesses?
She is probably plotting a rebellion bc the silk is essentially like a currency that can be used to buy weapons and she seems to have a lot of soldiers stashed at her mountain hideout. Of course they could be her father's bc he is a general but it seems she doesn't agree with her father's plans for her so I assume they are her own.

Yeah I used to just scroll past them but once he started directly badgering me incessantly over some borderline racist stereotype he insisted on I had to block him and I am so happy I did. I usually am very tolerant of posts I don't agree with but that dude just went too far.
