Actually the more I watch this, the more I think this was all grandma's fault. She forced her kids to bow to society's…
Lol - I think most of them conceived with the help of alcohol. I actually feel sorry for all of them. Elder bro should be master by birthright but bc his second bro is more capable, he is effectively demoted. He must have felt so threatened by second bro when he agreed to marry Chen when in his heart he wanted Gu. The second generation is replaying the first generation's mistakes with all the men pressured to do what they don't love doing and the women to marry for the family's advancement. All of these shows are social commentary on the times. Sword and Brocade, Story of Minglan, Song of Youth etc, they all explore similar themes. To grandma, it doesn't matter that Yinning isn't really a Luo bc she will never carry on the family's name anyway.

Title The Rise of Ning Spoiler
I understand the she killed herself thesis. But tbh if that is how they end it after wasting so many episodes…
I have no issue with it being suicide but since that is a trivial answer, it should be revealed quickly and not dragged on like this. As for whether they can turn it into romance in a convincing way, it is yet another issue that the longer it goes on for, the more difficult it will be. I understand the story and the characters and your many points etc. All I am saying is quite simply that the writing seems to have lost momentum and the plot has stagnated. Meanwhile we open even more sub-plots around Duke Ying, his foster daughter and Wang Yuan. This is not a good way to tell a story.

Chinese are very specific about lineage and kinship. There are different titles for maternal and paternal uncle…
Well technically there is no consanguinity even though there may be an implied relationship of trust that precludes it. But until the 1980s first cousins on the maternal side could still marry in China and it was a common practice. There were tons of 1960s, 1970s Taiwanese movies and love stories featuring romance between first cousins, in fact they were the most popular movies of those times. It only became incest in recent years with advances in scientific knowledge bc of the very real health issues involved. But during my parents time, it was quite common for cousins and other relatives on the maternal side to marry. This is recent history, it was more so during ancient history. Stories should be evaluated in the context of the the time they are set in.

Yes indeed the investigation should reveal LYN's birth but if there is nothing more to it than suicide, then its a sub-plot that has dragged on for way too long at this point. It has lost momentum and its making another important sub-plot more convoluted than it needs to be. Both sub-plots are now losing momentum and intensity for me. Not to mention, the sibling relationship has become so entrenched now its going to be difficult to turn it romantic in a convincing way.

Review Heroes
Your review is so very well written! I just finished watching the show and really enjoyed reading your review.…
Tyvm for reading and your kind words. I think this site is a better source of Asian content reviews than IMDB is but the show is not that popular on here either.

I think "uncle" is the one she loves. So I hope she ends up with him. Its also in Master Han's best interest.…
I hear TLJ succumbed to one of WS's infamous farts.

Lol - I know the feeling - my dad has 7 bros and 6 sisters and my mom has 6 bros and 7 sisters!!! I use names for my cousins too, adding a ge or jie for the older ones but since I have ~60 of them, its a different kind of shit show. And don't get me started on their kids bc unless they are super close, I don't bother to even know their names.

Exactly, your understanding is spot on. It is one of those words where the translation is correct but the meaning and cultural context is completely different.

Yes the Chinese way is very clear about these relationships but when I was a kid I was so super confused bc it works the same way with my aunts and grandparents as well... I had a crazy number of forms of address to remember.

I don't have SML syndrome at all. What I can't understand is why she even went near the guy. The way he behaves,…
She was quite intimate with him, to the point she'd probably have had to marry him if discovered. As I said, reckless with highly questionable judgement and good sense.

Well technically jiu jiu舅舅 is kau kau in Cantonese. Kau fu would be jiu fu 舅父 which is just another way to say the same thing. In today's context as there is no more polygamy it can only be a blood uncle (mother's brother) but in ancient extended family times and in the context of this one, it is usually a maternal uncle that is not always blood related.

She was super naïve and silly. The way he plays chess, how domineering he is, everything screamed red flag get the hell away. I suppose she did have some survival instinct that she never told him her real name. Even at this point, the way she is not coming clean when she knows better than anyone else that the guy is super dangerous.... I am sorry but in my book she just isn't a super smart FL. She is gonna get everyone killed.

Yes there are 5 different forms of address for my "uncles" - my dad's older bros and my dad's younger bros, my dad's sisters' husbands, my mom's bros, my mom's sister's husbands. They are all different so we know immediately not only who is related by blood and who is only related by marriage but also who is older and who is younger on the all important paternal side.

I don't have SML syndrome at all. What I can't understand is why she even went near the guy. The way he behaves, as if he owns the world and needs to win all the time screams psychopath. I seriously question her judgement and taste in men in all the flashback scenes.

Chinese are very specific about lineage and kinship. There are different titles for maternal and paternal uncle that make it very clear from the form of address that he is "less closely" related. That's why the princess knew right away that not only is he is not a related to her by blood but that they can marry. Chinese viewers won't find it icky or incestuous but I understand where you are coming from.

Watching episode 23, I'm starting to understand why Yining doesn't want to tell Shenyuan about her relationship…
I agree but I hope she comes to her senses soon. He is all the things you said but more than that, he is incredibly powerful, incredibly ruthless and incredibly dangerous. Her keeping quite endangers all of them.
