But until the 1980s first cousins on the maternal side could still marry in China and it was a common practice. There were tons of 1960s, 1970s Taiwanese movies and love stories featuring romance between first cousins, in fact they were the most popular movies of those times. It only became incest in recent years with advances in scientific knowledge bc of the very real health issues involved. But during my parents time, it was quite common for cousins and other relatives on the maternal side to marry. This is recent history, it was more so during ancient history. Stories should be evaluated in the context of the the time they are set in.

Yes indeed the investigation should reveal LYN's birth but if there is nothing more to it than suicide, then its a sub-plot that has dragged on for way too long at this point. It has lost momentum and its making another important sub-plot more convoluted than it needs to be. Both sub-plots are now losing momentum and intensity for me. Not to mention, the sibling relationship has become so entrenched now its going to be difficult to turn it romantic in a convincing way.

Chinese are very specific about lineage and kinship. There are different titles for maternal and paternal uncle that make it very clear from the form of address that he is "less closely" related. That's why the princess knew right away that not only is he is not a related to her by blood but that they can marry. Chinese viewers won't find it icky or incestuous but I understand where you are coming from.
