The novel is the ultimate male fantasy harem story, in the vein of Jin Yong's most popular novel The Deer and the Cauldron. It wasn't my favorite but I greatly enjoyed it and respect its unapologetic political incorrectness. It makes JOL look kind of progressive by comparison believe it or not. These types of stories are very popular and have their own place just as all the ultimate female fantasy harem stories do. I personally see no need to change this aspect, I am happy to watch it as the writer intended.

I think MSD decision was made long ago. He was always a supporter of the emperor's reforms anyway so it wasn't that hard to sway and when he got out of jail he saw repeated evidence of the Qing court's incompetence and corruption. I think he was only worried he would implicate/disappoint Gege if he revolted. But then he started to suspect Gege and figured out the Lucky connection once he knew she was his longtime customer. He switched sides when he started to hide things from Getai and decided first to save Liu Lin from the Japanese and then to sent her to Gege so they could join forces. He has allowed Lucky to follow all the clues to the treasure as well.

I wouldn't be shocked it were recycled except I read all the WOH costumes were auctioned off. In any case big budget means nothing. All it really means is they paid the lead actors a ton of money and cut corners on sets and costumes.
