That's interesting. My take on that conversation was GYX was hinting that it was Prince Xian who was the mastermind that did that to him. And that Prince Xian was just smoothly trying to gloss over that GYX called him out. That is why I was very confused when it turns out Prince Xian had no clue about GYX. In some ways it is like mid-course the drama changed course and decided to insert another mastermind.

Agree with your insightful and balanced comments and impressions. Dramas don't have to be perfect to be very enjoyable and this is a great example of that but at the same time it is fine and fair to point out flaws. I think it's a testament to Hu Yitian and Zhang Jingyi's strengths that they do a good enough job that viewers can gloss over the plot flaws. I don't think they got a lot of hate even though there were a few mean comments on HYT's looks. ZJY also more or less addressed concerns she wouldn't be able to pull off a costume drama.

Yours is a very fair summary of the Douban comments. I would add that I personally agree with the book reader comments about the beginning even though I didn't read it. I feel in the drama HZ is smart from the beginning and she doesn't really grow. I think I would have enjoyed to see a more low key and less confidently capable from the start HZ that actually grows into who she is as a result of the family's hardship. That aspect of her character development is diluted in the drama bc they made her so amazing from the start. So that aspect of the Douban comments I appreciated a lot but was hesitant to bring it up here bc I obviously didn't read the book.

As I have mentioned before I don't think it's a bad Douban score at all so they haven't exactly panned it for historical inaccuracy. Put it this way - higher rated dramas are still by definition but still manage to more closely reflect historical norms of the day. So it is a matter of degree.

Yeah registration can be tricky esp lately bc the govt is cracking down again no the internet. But if you manage to get it registered it is quite easy to vote you don't have to write anything just indicate how many stars and submit.

That is very true. I just wonder when it will dawn upon GYX how selfish and manipulative the emperor is. He doted upon him to spite his brother whom he suspected of rebelling and bc unlike his own sons, GYX was no threat to him.

Yeah his uncle is no better than his father as a person or as a father. Yet he can excuse the behaviour of one and not the other.

Totally - a prince scheming for the throne with spies you gloat about to YX... "there are eyes everywhere". I honestly thought he would be less sloppy and have figured it out at some point.

I never thought Prince Xian was the final villain but I am kind of disappointed how unintelligent he turned out. Like he had no clue GYX was the head of the secret police and he more or less was busted bc GYX/HZ were lucky and he was just not smart.

Yeah I think GYX's loyalty to him is so misplaced I am quite irritated. And I am a bit troubled he seemed quite affected than his uncle was potentially dying but his dad's death just rolled right off his back.

Tbh it's not that well explained why he schemed like that. His brother Prince Hui doesn't seem like a big threat He just had to wait and the throne would have been his. And in any case, instead of going after his father, why didn't he go after his brother instead?

The entire premise is a plot hole to begin with bc there is no such thing as the women and a few sons being allowed to stay in the capital unscathed while the men go into exile. Women and children would have been all sold as slaves, separated and become untouchables and Dowagers cannot interfere in legal and state affairs. I agree it is pure fiction so it doesn't bother me but I can understand their beef. The Douban user base is highly educated in Chinese culture and history and as the "inaccuracies pile up" they will suspend disbelief to some extent but after that will certainly lower their rating.

Yes he basically agreed to set him free. But he scarred him to make sure he can never compete for the throne and be a threat to whoever sits on it. That's also what cemented his trust in GYX in the beginning and also why Prince Xian never felt threatened by GYX from the time he saw the scar.

Even if you throw out all the 1* ratings on Douban and take the average again the Douban score is actually lower, closer to 6.0. It is bc the biggest portion of the votes are at 3*s. That is why Youku released the rating so early - it's not likely to move up much if at all from here. It's just simple math. The Douban comments are pretty good IMHO but as others have pointed out, there are lots of plot holes and cultural/historical inaccuracies that Douban viewers tend to be less forgiving of. In any case, it doesn't matter if you enjoyed it your rating is all that should matter most to you.
