This actor’s best tyrant portrayal is probably in Young Blood 2. He was also memorable as the failed crown prince turned into a porcupine in TRoP. This kind of paranoid emperor trope is quite common in c-dramas - the most famous and tragic ones include the emperors in TRoP, Nirvana in Fire and the one in Royal Nirvana. They all kill their brothers and eat their own young so to speak. And in real history there were also many similar emperors, notably Tang Taizong/Li Shimin and Empress Wu Tzetian.

The emperor was already seething inside but biding his time when he discovered GYX with HZ and it was killing him he owed her a favor for foiling Prince Xian’s revolt. When Shen Qi foolishly spoke up for Censor Hua it was brave but foolish. He poked a bear and made it obvious to the emperor that he was loyal to the Hua family and vice versa. The emperor seized the opportunity to use him to blackmail HZ into dumping GYX. If he had just side stepped the question like everyone else the emperor may not have been triggered like that. GYX may have had time to help extricate the Shens from their troubles. But ultimately I kind of want to smack GYX the most. I mean dude, next time you find a needle in the hair of a sleeping despot, just let it be!!!
