I think it is supposed to be Portuguese.
Tbh, I didn't know that about American pit bulls even though I know they are dangerous. Pet ownership is a new thing in China even though it's fast changing. Less than 70mm or 15pct of households have dogs or cats. Not saying it is not sloppy on their part but 20 years ago China was still a poor country and pet ownership is expensive. As I watch more of this, I also think Lu Yang himself has not spent that much time on this.

I only watched a little bit of it and I still can't un-see it.

I understand what you mean - even though White Crane had very little screen time, he stole the show. The two MLs were just kind of narrators. I enjoyed the movie; I generally like Chen Kaige's works. And the poem 長恨歌 or The Song of Everlasting Sorrow.is one of my favorite Chinese poems. But was the movie controversial? Or was it just Yang Guifei was a very controversial figure?

Huang Xuan was also the ML in Demon Cat.

Yeah c-dramas tend to be very sloppy with Western historical details. I think Chinese history itself is so long and involved their audience really isn't that knowledgeable about world history so they can be very careless with it. I think the director Lu Yang is wasted on this kind of fantasy monster drama.

Not a fan of her acting at all - she is very pretty but the same in every role. But if you like her, she is in tons of Taiwanese dramas. You can easily binge her works. She is also in something with Xu Kai but I would avoid that one.

So far so good. Really interesting, just wondering why they always make the eunuch so sassy with alter motives…
During this period in Chinese history the eunuchs pretty much were in control due to weak and paranoid emperors.

Title The Hope
What does it mean? Is it okay or bad?
It's doing very well - I think it passed 9000 on Youku shortly after airing. But there is a lot of competition right now, I think it may be behind Blossoms Shanghai and The Lonely Warrior.

That’s not bad considering how it’s overshadowed by Blossoms and the new year.
Yeah lots of competition at the moment....

Title The Mutations Spoiler
I think we may have a really interesting villain here:
I had my eye on He Zijiao ever since I saw Jiang Qiming cast in this role. He was so menacing in The Long Season he seriously scared me. I can't wait to see what he brings to the table in this one.

Hey, good to see you here. Yes, I think many from THAT drama have migrated here!😃 I am not that familiar with European history so much appreciate the useful color. What you said makes sense about why the Chinese way back then didn't know much about Europe and may have just lumped them all together, especially if they were speaking the same language. I used to spend a lot of time in Latin America years ago. I worked with many Mexicans, Peruvians, Brazilians, Argentinians, Venezuelans etc. I remember that even though some spoke Spanish and others Portuguese, they all seemed to understand each other and were able to communicate very well. But I was well beyond my optimal language learning years and never attempted to pick up either language.

I went back and looked it up. The Chinese subs use 佛郎机 which I have seen used in Macau and always understood to mean Portuguese and that is how most dictionaries define it as well. However, Baidu Baike says it was a name that referred to both Portugal and Spain during the Ming era although from their description it sounds more like Portugal. Considering others recognise they are actually speaking Spanish and as you point out Luzon was a Spanish colony in the Philippines, I think we should assume that in this drama it means Spanish. I guess the ancient Ming people didn't make a distinction between the two.

Thx - that's what I thought I heard - 佛郎机人 which is how Portuguese were called in Ming dynasty era.

I think it is supposed to be Portuguese.
I thought it was mentioned they are Portuguese and to my knowledge Spain had virtually no colonial presence in China. I also have Chinese subs on but I just look at them for character intros I just mostly listen. But I am only familiar with Brazilian Portuguese and what they spoke definitely did not sound right.
