Itās the whole polluted mutated seafood theme that was also the genesis of Godzilla. You can Google it it was a huge Japanese IP with an entire series of mutant seafood monsters from fish to crustaceans.
Yeah these new over-bright LED TVs are just not great to watch most stuff on.
Yeah this doesn't look good on my parent's newest TV either but on the older one they have in the upstairs den it looks fantastic so we are watching it there. These new TVs have too much definition - I watched a big chunk of Kunning Palace on my friend's top end Skyworth TV and I cringed at all the blemishes and flaky makeup but it looked fine on my ~5 year old Samsung. Most of China still watches on handheld devices although that is changing fast. I guess the production companies haven't optimised for the latest TVs yet.
This is a fantasy story set during Tianqi period late Ming dynasty. The Tianqi emperor was the second last Ming emperor and it is during this time that the evil eunuch Wei Zhongxian practically ran the country. He is mentioned in Ep 1 but hasn't appeared onscreen. Lu Yang has a thing about jin yiwei and eunuch Wei and this emperor - his famous Brotherhood of Blades movies were all about this period.
In any case, the Ming dynasty fell to Qing during the reign of the next Ming emperor directly as the result of what was probably a bubonic plague that raged for 8 years significantly weakening the empire. Obviously this is a fantasy that distorts history so they will have altered the facts here and there. Ming dynasty was the last Han Chinese dynasty in Chinese history.

Obviously this is some subliminal message from the nuclear waste from Fukushima that is being dumped into the ocean that has recently incensed China. And Wumu island has a Japanese look and feel. The monsters in this show however are obviously related to the meteorite that struck deep into the ocean.
