The FL role seems well written. Unfortunately I never liked her this actress acting. I think she is mis-cast and her styling makes it worse -she is already on the mature side to play someone mid-20s. The styling makes her look very matronly. Her face used to be heart shaped but now it looks so round, like she got fillers or put on face weight.

Yeah it should be relatively low fantasy.

Yeah it seems quite straightforward revenge story and the schemes are not that complicated either. But i guess that makes it easier to watch.

She was quite lovely in PWY but too obvious a villain. And she still looks good here but she definitely doesn't look mid-20s. Neither does CX and they are both getting flack for it. I am only at 3 and hoping it gets better. I agree she is definitely not as annoying as she was in other dramas. The issue is she is like a side character not an FL as in I don't care about her motives and I don't find myself rooting for her. She just bores me. No screen presence. I also don't find the plot gripping. I keep drifting and then have to rewind.

Who knows, they could change it in the drama but from Chen Xiao's own comments I wouldn't' put high hopes.

It's getting mixed reviews in China. Nice pictures but weak and not engaging plot. And there is not much love for the FL, which I personally understand. I don't hate her but I have never had a good drama experience with her.

Lol... I don't think many people remember she played the hateful Guo Fu opposite Chen Xiao's Yang Guo in a version of Return of Condor Heroes that I didn't watch.

Xuan huan to me implies strong Western fantasy elements like Ever Night, World of Fantasy and Blessed Girl. I think both SSS and TBOY are firmly based on Eastern philosophy (i.e Taoism, Buddhism) and fantasy so closer to xianxia per @Saeger. I just call them high fantasy wuxias bc the spirit of wuxia is stronger than the fantasy element.

I didn't read the novel but I did read that it is part of the "new wuxia" genre where its quite popular to have ML that can't fight or doesn't fight that well bc they are more about brains/strategies over fighting. It's stuff like Nirvana in Fire and Love in Between. People keep saying TBOY but I think its different bc there the ML can fight it was just suppressed. Of course they can change things from the book but I think even Chen Xiao said in an interview the ML best feature is his smarts.
