They gave him nothing to do. Hastings at least had a habit of stating the obvious and making the lightbulb go on for Poirot and he chronicled their cases. They created a reporter to do that here.
Predictably the drama at surface ends up just being a story that Lin Zhaoxi is telling a bunch of kids. She is with Pei Zhi and Lin Zhaosheng clearly does not have Alzheimer's. It was all a story she made up. Or was it? We can also think after sending cheese Pei Zhi back to cheese world, strawberry Pei Zhi with her help solves the p versus Np problem in time to cure Lin Zhaosheng. And she goes on to inspire young kids like herself to be their best selves. Sadly their actions have consequences and both Lin Zhaoxi and Pei Zhi have a less happy ending in the cheese world.

Detective L is a great choice, I hope you are enjoying it. Ancient Detective and The Imperial Coroner are both excellent ancient mystery dramas. For modern ones The Bad Kids, A Murderous Affair in Horizon Tower and The Long Night are also very good. If you are looking for something with a comedic vibe like MRIAD, you can check out The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty.
This is pretty good but I somehow like their dynamics better in MRIAD. They both had more interesting personalities in that show. Zhang Yun Long's character in particular in this is a bit dull and too archetypal.
