Zhou’s behaviour makes a lot more sense when viewed through the lens of who he is. As a 霸總 he’s likely accustomed to setting goals, putting in efforts and expecting measurable results quickly. From his perspective, he has been incredibly obvious and consistent in his pursuit of Liu from the very beginning.
Meanwhile, Liu’s journey has been much less straightforward. Zhou was never her first choice initially, we all know it was BK who seemed to hold more of her attention. Though, Zhou has been doing everything a persistent suitor could possibly do: flowers, gifts, tonic drinks, constant hints and unwavering attention to details. These are all genuine efforts on his part, but they also seem somewhat conditional. Deep down, he wants his investments to swiftly lead to ultimate exclusivity.
Many viewers have labelled Liu as “matcha” and accused her of stringing the men along. Personally, I think that’s an oversimplification. I have mixed feelings about Zhou’s conversation with Liu… On one hand, I think it’s reasonable for him to be vunerable and showhand, ask whether has she made up her mind yet or if she still needs more time to get to know LiZheng & JiYu. At this point, that’s a pretty fair question and all of us would be curious to hear her answer too!
What bothered me was the way he expressed his frustration. Contradicting himself, it was okay for her to know others but then Voicing his annoyance that she wasn’t sitting with him more often and was sulky that she was continuing to interact happily with the other suitors. BUT… they’re not even a couple yet. Of course she should be free to socialize, explore her connections and get to know others. And Zhou should be willing to withstand the whirlwind of unsettling emotions as like LiZheng has to too since they both actively pursuing her... That’s the whole point of the process. Acting as though exclusivity is already expected is not a plus point!
Obviously cornered and in tears, the fact that Liu was already experiencing Zhou’s sulky and impatient side before they’re even officially together… raises the question of whether would she has to constantly tiptoe around his feelings or accommodate/manage his expectations whenever he’s unhappy. IF this is how he reacts during a supposedly romantic, fun getting-to-know-you stage, heart thumping courting stage.
