i see two scenarios where the emperor ask him to such thing

1) either his friend did something treacherous and to save ZL from yk blame by association from his rivals he has to do this cruel task

2)a trap set by the rivals which his friend falls into and ZL is stuck btw delivering justice where trying to save his friend means implicating himself fty or many other yk a impossible scenario where both outcomes are equally bad

Tbh that's why I prefer shows with military couple or royalty couples like emperor empress
Because

1) military couple are mostly away and deal and don't have to take part in this political mess which is the court

2) royalty couple cuz they have the power to bend the will of everyone who oppose them directly or indirectly

Scholar couple deal with too much shit daily and it's kinda exhausting and suffocating.

That might be the case of madam yu and senior yu they may be full of life and hope like FTY and zl but the intrigues of the politics damaged them emotionally I would say that would explain why madam yu seems to think highly of FTY cuz she literally sees not her but a mirror to the past of what she was and what she has become now
