As for the lore, that's indeed up in the air. They did change the name of the ML, it is not Wang Zanghai anymore but Zang Hai, where Zang is a surname. So no more Wangs. He takes that name when he decided on revenge. I don't know if this means more distancing from the lore but it might.

I know that but that doesn't mean there will be the same type of input that there would be if Xu Lei himself was involved. He has nothing to do with it personally as was denied before. Not with the script, not with the promotion.
Nobody who means well to this show wants a repeat of 2018 which is why him not having any input is a good thing.
If Youku has really managed to get Wallace Chung and Yu Nan because they would be costly even for a guest role (of course because of ZXL but money) I am going to forgive them everything from before 😂
