So the *GENRES* are fake??? You read the genres which is Thriller, History, Mystery with these combinations, you…
There is romance, but it's subordinate to the mystery, and from what I can see, is essential to the characterization of the FL & ML.
The suspense, by the way, is excellent. I used to bitch at Criminal Minds because they would solve complex serial murders in a single episode. It took TWD 4 episodes to solve the first case with logical explanations (like the killer diverging off the well-marked garden path to walk through thorns).
From what I've seen, this is a well-thought-out, cerebral show. There's nothing extraneous, it's not linear, there are no overly longing looks and sadness despite the tragic circumstances--it's quick and thoughtful. It's very much NOT in the style of C-dramas that I've seen before (though, I am new to the genre, so I can't speak to all C-dramas).
am i the only one enjoying the drama?? it didn't boring at all because it really fast pacing and didn't have unnecessary…
I'm enjoying it immensely. (And already upset at the slow release of the episodes. I've gotten so used to binge-watching shows.) It's tight, well-paced, and suspenseful.
My God, does he get a break, ever? Though I'm glad he's sought-after and busy.
Better a workaholic now when he has the stamina. The joys of youth! Though I hope he still manages to dub his own characters. It would be totally weird to have someone else's voice coming out of his mouth now.
He also seems to be picking his roles very carefully (Duke Su, Meng Xiaodong, Zhong Xiwu, Zhang Zhe, and even Liu Zi Xing--he played them all so differently and so well) and I'm inclined to think anything he's in is going to be very good.
Calming waves was a WAYYYYY nicer name. why are they giving my lament of river immortal trauma again
But also, what a terrible marketing blunder to change the name so close to launch. If viewership drops, the fact that people couldn't FIND the show will be a major cause.
Very interesting article! I think the layered meanings of this show has been one of the reasons its been so popular. There are so many things the audience takes in without recognizing how it affects the scene or story. I especially enjoy the fact that the hero mostly appears in red or black (Duke Su, typically symbolizing evil) while the antagonist usually wears white (Shen Yurong, typically innocence or purity), a reflection of how tropes have been subverted throughout the show.
I noticed that FangFei's revenge arc is shrouded in pear blossoms, but her marriage is represented with plum blossoms, marking a divergence from vengeance and fear. Is there also a symbolism to the tree in Duke Su's courtyard?

Here I am hoping they don't solve each case too easily...
Also, Wang Xingyue is brilliant so far.
