I think watching both is very enriching because what the adults did in AOL, the young uns had to deal with in HG, I mean, TLI. One sees how YQ is like his father and one also sees the aftermath of learning stuff from his father and mother's choices, LOL.

Just keep in mind that all the responsible Older Responsible Immortals are off doing something or other throughout this drama, leaving these young immortals to fend for themselves among the sharks.

They hate it because this is a Xianxia about young immortals. All the old ones in this drama aren't present, except for a few Bad Ambitious immortals. For example, the ML's parents, who are the Supreme Beings--if you've watched Ancient Love Poetry, you'll know they're doing their story at the moment and unable to help out. Also, the Queen of Heaven is off to cultivate. Dong Hua, the ML's guardian and teacher, just ascended to the next level.

So, these few young'uns are left to fend for themselves among the sharks going after power. The ML does one wrong thing in the beginning because he was naive and has to pay for it for the rest of the drama because he made an oath to do things right by the FL. He just doesn't know how HEAVY the price is going to be.

I see this drama like the Scooby Gang in the first half, as they go off on their quest to look for A Yin's soul pieces. The second half is when they have grown up and has come into their power. You will see how they use this new responsibility to find out the truth and to avenge A Yin.

I loved this drama so much. Most viewers cannot abide by the ML's naive actions in the first half, but he is supposed to be a 200 year-old trying not to show his hidden identity against very, very cunning older immortals who have been at this game for thousands of years. He doesn't have his parents' tutelage and every adult is telling him something different. If you stay with it, the second half is a great emotional payoff as he rights all the wrongs and as A Yin shows HER hidden godhood.

My opinion too. You chose this route, where is the emotional payoff? About the same rating in my review.

BWJ is actually not a bad actor. I do think the writer really did the character a disservice. I didn't mind him being the Green Tea (I caught on almost immediately what his character was all about, so huzzahs to the actor because his interpretation was on point) but his arc was too long when it came to the Xiyan/Heir/SunMoon-Immortality-WTFrackery LOL. It was just out of the blue. What the audience wanted was more MRJH and MeiLin shenanigans/wuxia/ gothic relationship and the writers could not deliver what they promised. (BUT I WILL! I'll get back to our favorite past time up in the Other Topics soooooooon!)

Blow yourself, honey. You're the one coming in and talking about "tolerance of forehead tattoos". No one goes into, let's say an Indian drama, and question about the forehead bindi or into an Nigerian movie and complain about the makeup. Why should anyone tolerate such hateful language of another culture?

You could have asked about the historical significance, but instead your post showed your dismissive attitude of something unfamiliar but was important for that era. So why should we tolerate that kind of thing on a board about a historical drama?

Yes, this seems to be a problem with current batch of writers. The PAYOFF is not there. In writing a revenge drama, there must be a worthy payoff or there is no revenge. That's why I simply cannot forgive the writer that took Mei Lin out of the revenge part of the story by sending her away as Xiyan princess bride. WTF. She kept being given away! I think I joked somewhere that first MRJH gave her to Xiyan then Xiyan gave her back to MRJH and then MRJH through his father, gave her back to Xiyan and then XueYin (cliff scene) gave her back to MRJH. WTF?! LOLOLOL
