I completely agree. He was extremely well written, you don't get that often in Cdramas where characters often are either good or bad. But he had so many sides and the script really gave him enough screen time to shine. Considering that they usually want to show more young and beautiful faces, that was a courageous decision, but it totally paid off. The actor was also really charismatic and I actually started to swoon over him after a few episodes. They took great care to show him as this super strong general.

I didn't watch the new episodes, but yes, in the first eight episodes I did have trouble following the cases. In fact, I gave up trying to understand and focused on our couple instead lol. That's also why I think the drama isn't very interesting when you leave their cute scenes out. Not taking into account the BL aspect, there definitely are better crime dramas.
