There’s not really a controversy yet, only people pointing out that the drama reminds of the chinese wuxia/xianxia…
Also , this series is picked up by Netflix, so it will target an international audience, so I have hope that it will do fine. The great majority of international folks won't care about this, honestly.
The only thing that might come close is Nirvana in Fire (2015). No so much with the love, but more with the I-told-you-so revenge that the main character gives to those who destroyed his life over frivolities.
I would also add King's Avatar, nice gaming drama with Yang Yang as a lead :)
Definitley the BEST cgi. Crazy good. Kings Avitar is so freakin' good. But I am a gamer also and that comraderie shown in this show gives me so much LIFE: really gives a taste of WHY so many love to game.
Haha! Never know with these writers (Hong sisters)! I did love A Korean Odyssey....and to me it has a 'happy ending' cause you know the character's personality ;P But Hotel del Luna......OMG...... Here's to hoping for a happy ending! Cheers!
Isn't it supposed to be a fantazy drama set in an imaginary country and imaginary era?
I think they are referring more to the look and feel of that era and not the actual historical era. Personally I'd rather have fantasy to hopefully get rid of the rampant sexism from all previous eras ;P
bro everything abt this look like it's stolen from chinese drama I HATE IT HERE
Why is this even making you angry? How does this even diminish Chinese dramas in any way? Does China have a monopoly on clothing now even if other cultures/societies/countries literally wore the same thing in their own history? Why is this even an issue? This is a FANTASY for entertainment, not some social commentary hating on the Chinese entertainment industry or Chinese anything. At WORST, it is 'influenced by' Chinese culture; but isn't that like the BIGGEST compliment to any entity really? Hardly a negative thing at all.
I’m confused some says its a healthy relationship because there are no fighting or misunderstandings, the leads…
It's a healthy relationship. There are some cultural things going on that I think some in the international community (not of that culture), do not understand and thus take completely out of context or just don't understand what is going on. The translation is also a little weird sometimes, so it might be that too (take translations lightly). It is not their fault for their lack of experience since they grew up in a totally different culture and may not have a lot of experience with other cultures. For example, making tea is a respectful cultural ritual you do when meeting your in-laws; there is no evil ulterior motive to it. That is why when you watch shows from different cultures, it is helpful sometimes to step back and ask those in the culture "what does this mean" or "why would so and so do this".......before jumping to misinterpreted conclusions. Slowly learning and understanding other cultures without judgement helps to build a better more caring and empathetic world.
