Wang hedi doesn't have a usual type of role. We can goo through his entire filmography and ask 'what even is usual for him?'

This drama can be seen as a litmus test for reviewers on this site. It has a very popular and trendy enough actor with one of his best performances yet, but the rating isn't that different from other dramas in the related genre on this site.

You could say even someone like Wang Hedi isn't enough to give a high 8 rating to a drama like this.

7.8 is really undeserved. Despite any personal issues I have with this drama it definitely deserves much higher than 7.8. Smh

At least in China people are watching it heavily to where even Universities are screening it. But people on this site only like pretty man-woman dramas or costume dramas.

As someone who just started episode 14, I would say that besides the overarching mystery; some of the best parts of this story are the downtimes and the character building moments, especially the scenes with Ran Fangxu and He Yuanhang.

And yes, Wang Hedi's acting has been great, same with Pan Yueming, but those are just a few reasons and nowhere near the only ones.

His voice perfectly fits the character. In the 90s, Ran Fangxu is supposed to be an introverted, nerdy yet righteous and brave young man. Nothing is ever as simple as 'serious' or 'funny' (it's kind of disrespectful to reduce a character to either of those things anyways).

There are always toxic people who claim to be a fan of a certain person. As I said before the hate here is relatively lukewarm.
