I tried to read the novel .I read it up to chap 40 ,it was much more strong of the drama, especially Lufeng. You…
Yes, for sure. The second volume is the darkest one by far, but I think it's the one where you can understand the characters and their dynamics better. Also, even though it's a great adaptation that follows the novel very closely, I personally like to read the characters' points of view and thoughts. Although the series gives certain hints, sometimes you just can't know what their motivations are.
(Disclaimer: long post with fragments from the novel) I liked today's episode, but I missed so many moments from the novel. The most important one for me is the moment when Yi Chen blocks and protects Lu Feng. I was really hoping for that monologue/dialogue, so I just have to share it here:
From start to end, it may have been a span of less than three seconds. From the moment she pulled out the gun she had hidden in her handbag and aimed it at Lu Feng, until the time the bullet shot with an intent to kill hit me straight in the heart. As blood started gushing out of my chest, I looked down at the spreading red stain in puzzlement. Am I the one ….. who blocked him? How strange ….. how did I get in front of him? There obviously were not enough time to think …… Instinctively, I just …… I staggered and fell down. This is actually not bad. I am too tired, I always wanted a good rest. From now on, he will not hurt me anymore. A sharp pain emanated from my chest. The person holding me seems to be Lu Feng. My eyes are blurred, unable to see his expressions. “Xiao Chen, Xiao Chen …….” Are you calling me that? Why does it sound so unfamiliar ……. “Please don’t …….” Don’t what? Even hearing …… is becoming difficult. If I don’t speak now, will I never again have the chance? With great effort, I opened my mouth: ” …… I hate you.” “I know….. ” He desperately wiped at the blood that kept welling out from the corners of my mouth, “I know, don’t talk anymore ……” “I hate you,” I wanted to say it all with my last remaining breath, “You did that to Yi Chen ….. you caused my mom to …… you destroyed my …… you …… Wen Yang ……” I was still trying to speak, but the fresh blood rushing up my throat was gushing out in such large amount that it was impossible to. “I know …… I know it all, you stop talking now, just wait for a while, I’ll take you to the hospital, you ……” “…… I …… “I struggled, “…… hate you, but ……” But, why do I feel……. …… so sad? …… that feeling that is deeper than hate, what is it? The world turned silent.
Also, although I liked how they portrayed Lu Feng's moments taking care of him in the hospital, I like those scenes in the novel a lot because he explains his POV during the whole kidnapping, because in the series they only explain who is Ke Lo:
“My hate for you eats at my heart every single day, it is ingrained in my soul and it made me want to torture you without any mercy, I want to hurt you, to break you, to make you suffer like you did to me. It seems like I have succeeded …… but I could not stop my urge to touch you. I did invite Zhuo Wen Yang over that day, but I only planned to insult and shame you to his face.” I laughed bitterly, “When would I ever be so generous as to casually allow others to look at your body …… That one time I drugged you to make you touch Lin Jing, I was racked with heartache for so many days. It’s safe to say the jealousy is still there, as raw and as scary as ever, isn’t it funny?”“And that time I was a little drunk, I was looking at you, you were so close to me, yet so far …… I could not stop myself from wanting to get closer to you, so close I have to be inside you …… It wasn’t until he showed up that I remembered I made that arrangement for him to come. I really didn’t mean for that to happen.”
“I am really disgusted with myself, I hated you so much, I’ve been plotting to get back at you for so many years, but I just could not bring myself to do more to you. That night your fever came back, and you held me, sobbing and calling …… crying …… for me …… You kept calling out my name …… I was thinking at that time, should I just end it all for both of us, that would be the only way to erase the past …… Or can we forget it all, and live together like this from now on ……”
“I didn’t want to be affected by you anymore, or be swayed by you, so I abused you, deliberately ignore your suffering, I wanted to see if I can build a disdain for you so much that it would harden my heart enough to rid you off of my mind….. but I could not help but want to hold you and sleep with you, so I kept bringing back those young guys with me, but it did not work …… No matter what I did with them, it felt so empty, so unfulfilling, so meaningless …… You are the only person I desire, it had always ever been only you that I want ……”
“But you actually said you want to leave again, I was so enraged that I really wanted to break your legs ….. so you can never run away from me again …… Why do you always want to leave me? Why? In the past …… and now ……”
I have to admit that I am disappointed with the bath scene. I was hoping for more; not for it to be exactly like the novel, but at least not so heavily cut. In the trailer, it looks way better (I guess that's just my personal opinion). Also, what happened in the novel, from my personal point of view, truly shows Lu Feng and Yi Chen's feelings:
Our bodies fluctuated while being glued together, my futile struggle against the pressure of his brutal ramming slowly became lame. I seized his shoulders in disorientation, subjecting myself to his massive pumping, while my waist which was just writhing desperately, is now sore and limp, trembling passively. He pushed me back against the rim of the tank and pushed in even deeper, holding my shoulders, his lips pressing closer to my face. A scream escaped from me a second before his lips touched mine, my head jerked quickly to the side to avoid his kiss. “No ……” Don’t kiss me, you can do whatever you want to me, just don’t kiss me again …… He did not ease off his attacks, instead cupping my chin firmly in one hand. I refused to comply, shaking my head blindly. “No don’t ……. no ……” I had my lips pressed closed, no matter how hard he tried to tease them or pry them open, I stubbornly clenched my teeth tight. He ran out of patience, his fingers clamped down on my cheeks, forcing me to open my mouth. My bones felt a crushing pressure as I shuddered in pain, and closed my eyes to accept the inevitable. He held onto my jaws to freeze my movements, his tongue finally invading its way in. A bittersweetness spread out in my mouth. Why must you insist on kissing? Don’t you think ….. kissing implies so much more emotions than plain sex?
And last but not least, one of the core moments during the kidnapping for me is one of the nights when Yi Chen has a high fever and starts to be delirious. Lu Feng stays with him that night, and you can read that this specific night gave him the thoughts of giving up on his revenge plan:
It could be around midnight when my body temperature heated up again. I burned in high-grade fever, burying my face in the mattress and rubbing my forehead against it in a semi-conscious effort to relieve some of the discomfort. My body alternates between intense chills and hot flashes, my eyes could not open, my ears could not hear. Someone came to hold me in my dreams. I grabbed the clothes of that person crying for my mother. In my delirium, I ended up calling another name, I called for this missing part of myself over and over again, crying so hard I could barely breath. I really, used to, love him so much.
I hope that with these fragments you can understand the characters better, and maybe you will be willing to read the novel.
Btw im confused about the camera in ep 9, did lu feng set it up and tried to sleep with him on purpose or it was…
In the novel, it is Yi Chen's son who catches them. Although at that moment Lu Feng's feelings were sincere and having sex wasn't part of his revenge, it was almost as if they were reconciling. Since the series doesn't feature Yi Chen's son, I assume the camera serves the same purpose. The camera is there to monitor Yi Chen's every movement (as seen right before the bath scene), so I think that in that moment Lu Feng forgot about it. He was already deep kissing Yi Chen when, unfortunately, Yi Chen sees the camera and thinks Lu Feng is doing it on purpose, just as part of his revenge.
I was expecting maybe too much from these episodes after reading the novel (sorry, I know they made some adaptations and I should focus on the drama, but the drama itself is based on the novel and there are plenty of dialogues that are copied straight from it). I knew, based on what they have been doing, that they were toning it down and the whole kidnapping was going to be much lighter than in the novel. If you are interested in reading the kidnapping chapters (it starts in volume 2, chapter 15), I encourage you to do so because it's really worth it. Despite taking that into account, I was still hoping to see two crucial moments (at least for me) that didn't happen, which made me kind of sad. One of them is the iconic bath scene. I think what we saw was Yi Chen's POV because, at that point, everything in his mind is chaotic and confusing (I refuse to believe they cut those scenes from the trailer). Tomorrow, we will probably see what really happened. The other one, I won't reveal until tomorrow (probably nobody cares about this opinion, but I want to post some fragments of dialogue or thoughts from the characters that help to understand the situation better), because maybe they will include it even if it doesn't follow the exact storyline. For me, those two scenes were proof of how much each character loves the other. What I liked the most about today's episode was the symbolism they used throughout the whole episode, emphasizing Yi Chen's kidnapping with the cage or the huge chains on the bed, and how he is losing his vitality through the sunflower. Those little details made me think that they want to show you in many different ways what is happening without saying a single word.
Xu Yuan, please don't misunderstand anything! In the beginning, Zhan Wang told you he is gay, just like his brother. Later, you two had one of the cutest scenes for a first kiss, and now, because there's someone who claims to be his fiancée, you start to get jealous and suspicious? No, please, no!
Aaaaaaaaaaa, what a great feeling! I have just woken up and seen the preview, and I see that they are following the novel. Hopefully, they don't change the dialogue; some of the lines are my favorites, and I would like to see this adaptation with those dialogues. What a lovely way to start a day!
exactly what I said he’ll be sooo sad and he might feel like it’s cause of the fact that he’s a jinx😔
Completely agree. I don't know why, but I feel like he will blame himself for the tumor, and there will be some misunderstanding leading to break up/separation
This comment section is going to be a war zone 😭🫠 Everyone says they’re ready for Lu Feng’s revenge…
Sorry, English is not my first language, so sometimes I misunderstand messages or find it difficult to grasp the other speaker's intention. I completely agree with you. If you haven't read the novel, what is about to happen is for sure going to be surprising. The episodes themselves are interesting, but reading people's comments and analysis of the situation later is going to be on another level. I've already read some good perspectives in the YouTube comments that make you reinterpret the novel and the actions of the characters.

It's not gonna be worse than the novel, which is why I'm here to watch his villain era. And I only said that about the bath scene because they're following the novel overall. They'll cut some kidnapping events because there are no sons in this adaptation, but they're pretty much sticking to the book.
I really hate how they behave towards actors who decide to participate in BLs. Every time a Chinese BL reaches a certain level of popularity, both nationally and internationally, these unforgivable behaviors usually happen. It makes me sad to think that, regardless of the type of series (BL or not), actors and actresses have to face sasaengs.
I am happy that they are following the novel but also changing some aspects. For example, I remember reading the novel and the 20-year separation was too long; this 5-year gap is much better. Also, it seems there is no trace of any son. Additionally, I really like how they toned down Lu Feng's personality. Next week, things will escalate to an interesting point, but not enough to make me hate him. I despised Lu Feng's character in the novel, as well as how Yi Chen behaved when he was back together with Lu Feng in his house. I am really interested in how they are going to portray the following scenes
Partly but it’s Cheng Yi mom, she saw them kissing passionately and had a heart attack and did the fucking guilt…
In the novel, 20 years pass. He has a son with a woman from a one-night stand when he was drunk. He said the woman's eyes reminded him of Yi Chen's eyes. The woman tried to pursue him while he tried to stay away from her, until she appeared and said she was pregnant.
I really loved this episode. Their daily life together was so sweet, although there were a few red flags—I mean, he kicked out Yi Chen's tenant, among other things... Ayden is such a good actor. In 18:18, you can see he is a sick person, not just because he is in the hospital, but because you can see the obsession that Lu Feng has towards Yi Chen.
