I think you just not appreciate slow burn drama if you hate characters talking. It is palace drama, what do you expect? Summoning a dragon?? About some character being black and white, the story always needs one. You can't have every characters become grey, morally grey characters stands out if a thing around them is black and white. Both Ning and XW are morally characters as best. They are not hero for sure.

Even Game of Thrones which had so many grey characters but they still have an ultimate baddie which is Night King. Antagonist always needed.

It is PTSD. A trauma triggered whenever he surrounded by snow and it complete distressful . But PTSD is modern term so they need to find a better word, even though Dementia is not correct but overall you get the idea.

So her objective now it to prevents a blood shed, to achieve that somehow she needs to dig deeper into palace politic which she never been involved before. If it's a good drama, 38 ep will not enough. But it's a bad drama, duration will not help at all but instead waste of time.
