I found this show by accident. It seems low budget but it's so good! I started two days ago and have binged through 9 episodes already. I love the mix of scifi wuxia mystery here. I didn't like it in Whisper of Fate, which has much better cgi and visuals. I felt that one got sidetracked by making pretty cross-genre set pieces that did not advance the story. Here, the cgi is bad, but the mystery is engaging, and the pacing is great. I hope the story stays tight and fast-paced until the end (unlike most dramas I've watched recently)
I just finished. It's a nice and easy watch for someone who likes mystery dramas. I wonder if Netflix will eventually release the special and the movie in the US. I'm very curious to see how Michio is doing after the series ending
It's a little difficult to follow the last case with all the fast fowarding of the team's scenes without ML. But they made me so angry!! I liked ML, but the show is kind of bad except for him. The team is useless (except Mr Jang). The cases are unrealistic and all end in fairytale fashion. The final case stretched the suspense of disbelief way too far - what kind of kangaroo court x 3 will tolerate that kind of cross-examination?! For some reason, the last case feels more unbelievable to me than oh my ghost clients (which also have a crazy unbelievable ending). I had high hopes and liked the early episodes but am really disappointed in the end
Wow, FL and the other girl on the team are so annoying. I am only on episode 5, and I am starting to fast forward scenes they are in because I really cannot stand their naive better than thou attitude. I like ML too much to drop, and the cases are predictable enough so far, I think I won't miss anything.
I just started the show and binged the first 4 episodes. The ML is great and really carries the show. His character here reminds me of oh my ghost client. He really excels at the right spot between quirky and cringey and makes watching fun. I can't say the same for the team thus far. They are so useless and preachy in comparison. I get from the fairytale happy endings of the two cases that this is a "feel-good" type of show, but the team is just too in your face about it
I’m not a fan of this ‘17-minute-plus’ episode format. Including the intro and outro songs, then you get…
I love the new case, more so than some in S3, but I am not a big fan of the 17 min episode format either. I have been waiting and watching in batches of 4-5 episodes with fast-forwarding of intro and outro. That has worked out well for keeping my attention on the storyline and clues. I don't think I'd be as engaged if I were watching each episode separately. It's just too short
I just finished. I liked the season, but it doesn't have many strange/folklore elements in it. I don't feel like I've watched a full season of SToTD. I think I will go back and rewatch S1 again :P
I can't believe the drama is over 😭 I'm going to miss everyone so much. I'm so excited for the 4th season coming…
I am on last case. I enjoyed S3. But unless the last case is mind-blowingly awesome, my favorite is S1 followed closely by S2 then a lot farther behind by S3. I love the creepy atmosphere and strange/folklore elements of S1. It was a very refreshing concept and one of the first to do it well. So although S2 has better production value, pacing and cast chemistry, S1 remains my favorite. I gave both a 9.5.
The cases in S3 are much simpler and more predictable than previous seasons. Not to mention, there is not much "strange" about a couple of them at all. They could have fit in a normal costume detective drama. Add that to the occasional relapse of LLF to his S1 arrogant self, S3 is not in the same class as S1 and S2 for me. It's probably an 8 or 8.5 for me
Exile is too light punishment for what the other merchant priest had done. He even held a public office. 😱
Yeah, I don’t know why his punishment is so light. Was he representing merchants from other countries, and killing him would cause some diplomatic incident? I must admit I wasn't paying that much attention on this case. I was busy being annoyed with LLF and the disrespect SWM gets from all sides :P
Well I don't think LLF is wrong to chastise SWM for impersonating him. I mean even in today day and age, its a…
Heh, yes, that is true. But his rudeness/arrogance level bounces back and forth. I especially like what SWM said. That a high born who understands their purpose is to serve everyone including common folk is truly special. Over the seasons, I thought LLF was growing into that. But this season and how often he reverts back to his annoying S1 self this season shows he really is not even close. I am just disappointed. That's all. I will watch as long as SWM (and Master Fei) are investigating cases. They are so fun to watch.

I am sure both sides are bad. My problem is with LLF's attitude. As SWM said, it's ok to disagree about direction of a case. It's ok for LLF to criticize him too. That is part of work.
What I'm not ok with is the self-righteousness "I am better than you" attitude, not after all they've been through together. It's like all his character development went away.

He did not go off on SWM for impersonating him. He did it because he thought SWM did it without a good reason. Which by S3 he should know better.
I hope they don't stay in Chang'An after this season. I am starting to run out of goodwill towards LLF. I couldn't stand him at first but grew to like him over the seasons.
And to be honest, if being in Chang'An with "his" noble peers makes him behave like an ass to his true friends whenever he feels like it, he does not deserve my goodwill.
On the 6th case. LLF is back to his S1 annoying self again. He really should know better by now.
Yes, he is high born and can get away with being an ass if he wants to. I'm Chinese and know how hierarchical society was (still is in some ways). But as LLF said, he is not afraid of trouble if it means doing what's right. I'd have thought being respectful of friends who have saved you life multiple times is *right*
At the end of S2, I thought he finally understand that his duty as official is to serve the common folk. But this season, he's reverted 3 times back to arrogant ass already. At this point, I'm thinking he doesn't deserve SWM's friendship and PXJ.
Wow, case 5 is short! It feels a bit rushed and the main villain is a bit anticlimactic. But I still like it for the all round happy ending. It's two in a row now. I am kind of starting to worry it might be the calm before the storm....
