On episode 3. I can't believe they used the only story element I don’t like in Mysterious lotus casebook (which I otherwise love) here. Why do the writers think that's a good idea?! Argh! I really hope they resolve that (quickly and differently).

You need to have zero expectation to enjoy this drama.I watched Coroner's Diary, but have zero problem with The…
Good to know. I will try to forget my expectations, heheh

I am only halfway in episode 1 and I already don't like ML or FL. I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe I am comparing them to the leads Coroner's Diary. The leads here just seem so immature and conceited by comparison. I'll try to be patient though. I love costume detective shows and this looks promising.

Is this a re-imagining of Justice Bao? Some of the characters names are the same or similar and some of the cases make nods to important story elements in some of the iconic stories (5 mice, the Pan case and the famine). I read chinese so I was watching traditional chinese subtitles, and those reads like the old poetic speech too that I rarely see now which seems like hommage to some sort of original material too.

I held off watching after the first episode so I can binge. I almost cried at the start of ep2 with the mom's story. It explains so much. I think I'm going to need a lot of tissues before the show is through

This show is so fun. All the mains are likeable and have great chemistry. The mysteries are a bit obvious but it's nice to watch the FL and ML follow the leads and find evidence.

This is very good. I binged in 3 days. The story is fast paced and tight, the cast has great chemistry and each main character brings something unique to help solve the mystery. The only thing I don't like is the violence. Some of it is needed for the plot, but a lot of it seems unnecessary and gratuitous. I think it would have been an even better show with less "in your face" brutality. I wonder how much of the low rating is because of people being turned off in the early episodes, which has one of the most violent scenes in the show (that I thought was completely unnecessary).

If you want to see Zhuo Yichen fly with giant wings and slay keep watching. If you want to see Li Lun make a turn…
Wow, that sounds great and a lot to cram into 4 episodes. I got to episode 31 and have not seen any of that. I am taking a break from the show because the episode seemed like the start of another repeat (plague again). But this gives me motivation to finish . Thank you.

I binged through the first half very quickly, but I can't seem to get into it in the same way after the Mt Kunlan. The team is rarely together, and one lead after another is kind of 'out of commission' and just dreaming or reminiscing. It feels like the same story elements get repeated, and the plot hasn't really moved forward. I am about 2/3 through now. Does the pace pick back up?

Late to the show and just binged the first few episodes. I love the demon and the kid doctor already. I don’t like the FL or SML so far, but I think they will grow on me as they work on the cases together. I am getting a mysterious lotus casebook vibe from this, so I have high hopes (and tissues ready for a sad/open ending :P )

I managed to finish the show. The ending feels very rushed and kind of incomplete. I know I'm not supposed to…
There are 7 relics and five people in the phoenix squad. Does that mean one or more of them got 2 relic? But if one person can host more than one relic, why did all of them need to do it together? Isn’t it safer to leave some of the group who can fight uninfected as a backup plan?

I managed to finish the show. The ending feels very rushed and kind of incomplete. I know I'm not supposed to expect logic but the final story is also the one that made the least sense. I'll put my question under a spoiler

I'm not sure if we understand what happened in the second case the same way... Because my takeaway about Yi Wan…
I think we did not see the 2nd case in the same way. I cannot stand how he keeps shifting blame to the old village head instead of owning up to what he himself did and the show treats that as justified.

Two wrongs do not become one wrong because one of them is committed by a main character. I would agree with your interruption of the case if he admitted he did something wrong in the heat of the moment as a child as he moved on. But to the end, he still believed the villagers owed him and he did nothing wrong as he walked away. And the other characters encouraged him!

It's rare that I find a second male lead annoying to the point of thinking about dropping. He screwed up in the 1st case and the back story and behavior in the 2nd case is just the height of selfishness and self righteousness. Am I supposed to have sympathy for what he did? He felt sad only because of the loss of the place of his childhood memories. The lack of remorse for how his actions affect others is IMO disgusting. I really wish he would get his punishment, though that's probably not going to happen.

In general, is that level of selfishness viewed as acceptable in China? A lot of cdramas have this type of characters (usually FL) who acts without consideration of the consequences and the other characters (usually ML) just sympathizes and comforts instead of calling them out for their behavior.

I liked the ML and FL and the other characters and the mystery but I don’t know if I can keep watching this.

The FL is so annoying! This seems to be a common theme when I re-watch these old Japanese shows on Netflix. I cringe at the MLs at times but I invariably cannot stand the FLs anymore.

Also, for those watching on hulu basic subscription in US, is it me or does this have more ad breaks than other kdramas? There were like 10 of them in the 1 hour episode

Just finished episode 1. It is a bit slow. But I love the cinematography and how it takes time to build the characters. I like the ML's melancholy and detachment and am looking forward to see his character evolve. The FL's exaggerated mannerisms is a bit much for me at first but I understand the forced cheer and is a good contrast to ML. For some reason, the show reminds me of the feeling i had when i cried my eyes out during the 1st few minutes of the pixar movie Up . It's that life is finite and every love story no matter how sweet has an end type of feeling. But there is the hope that the end itself is a beginning. I typically stay away from romance, but this might become one of my favorite shows if it keeps that emotional center through its run.

Viki recommended this movie to me as comedic action. It is totally not a comedy. I do love it though.

I have to admit I didn’t know about the controversy around the main actor until I looked him after the movie. Acting-wise, he is really great in this show. He was spot-on both as the idiot and the spy. I hope the situation clears up one way or another soon.
