Any news on which service bought US rights yet? I only have Netflix now and got a promo offer from Hulu to rejoin. Just wondering if I should sign up for Hulu/Disney since I will gladly pay them if they let me watch this show as it's released
Good to know ripe town is good. It is on my watch list but I haven't found motivation to seriously start. Longest day in Chang'An is on my watch list too though I'm only so-so on political intrigue. I think i will probably start eith Kill my sins, then Ripe town or Vendetta of An. I've seen Towards the truth, League of gentlemen, Judge Dee and Wanted detective already.
Have you watched The Ancient Detective? It has romance but not the focus.Mysterious Lotus Casebook which is a…
Thank you for the recs. I have seen both, but it has been a long time since I've watched Ancient Detective. I don't really remember the cases anymore so it'll almost be like a new show :) I'll go find and watch it.
I am having a bit of a costume mystery withdrawal after finishing ZZA and Tang Mist and Tang dynasty occult mysteries. I tried Veil of Shadows but didn't like the vibe and decided to drop it. Does anyone have recs on costume detective shows like ZZA or Tang Mist (preferably with no romance)? I can rewatch ZZA or some old Justice Bao or Strange Tales of Tang dynasty. But I'm hoping for something new.
just drop it already! save yourself and everyone here from all that headache 😉
Yes, I will drop the show. I don't think this style of drama is for me. I am too old for the love (and total devotion) at first sight without reason. I also don’t know if this will have a bad ending for the sake of making leads suffer even when it doesn't really make sense (like FoF), so I am not going to risk it. I will find another mystery to watch instead.
I am only on episode three. Is this from the same team behind Fangs of Fortune? It is visually great. The action is good and the plot is engaging too. But the dialog seems forced and overly pretentious. I can't help but feel the way the characters interact and speak to each other is unnatural. The only exceptions are maybe Joseph Zeng with his demon friend and between TJR and YA. All the other interaction gives me this superficial and artificial vibe (like this is not the way real people act).
The FL is the worst of all. She is like the stereotypical "fox demon" down to airy tone and lowered batting lashes. It is grating so I am fast-forwarding her scenes until she drops the act (which I hope will be soon). But how much are they going to push the romance? If it is the same team as Fangs, and it has similar amount of forced inexplicable romance and the elevation of the character played by TJR at the expense of everyone else, I think I will quit while I'm ahead. Nothing can make me watch another FoF. That show started as a 10, then slowly became an 8, and if I were to rate the ending alone, I would give it a 0. That is how much I hated it.
I just started this show on Netflix. Is the FL going to talk like that the whole time? I find the slow soft airy tone extremely annoying. It's the super cliche "seductive fox demon bedroom" voice. It's not as bad in small doses, but she uses the same tone all the time, even when talking to her cousin.
The production value looka great. I like the action and mystery and am a fan of Joseph Zeng and Chen Du Ling from MLC. But I am only 1 episode in and already want to go on mute or fast forward every time the FL speaks. I don't know if I can continue if that is actually her normal speaking voice for the entire show.
I just finished the show. I think the 2nd case is by far the best. The 3rd is pretty good too. But the last two are disappointing. The cg on the "giant ghost" was laughable but the plot was ok though predictable. But the last case is just not well-paced or plotted at all. There is also nothing creepy which is what makes the rest of the show good and unique. It is the worst of the five cases by far. I think they'd be better off ending on any of the other cases instead
I just finished the 3rd case. It's very predictable (again) and not as good as the 2nd. The atmosphere though is still great and ML really carried the show.
Wow, they did what they did in original 7 heroes and 5 gallants novel to BYT! No one ever dared do that before!! Even if they undid it in the after-credit, I'm still surprised!
Surprise aside, I honestly think the ending episode is way too rushed and a total cop-out. It left so many things unexplained like what's with the arrow (I'm guessing BYT) or how the leads survived.
The drama was a 9.5 for me until that last few episodes. It became a 9 and now I'm thinking it's more like 8.5. But I love the action and the chemistry... I just wish they'd make one more episode so they can give a proper resolution
I just binged 30-34. I am happy that they have wrapped up the mystery of the four helpers, but I think it’s far too rushed. It’s like they just info dump everything in the episodes with no investigation at all. I miss the pacing from before where the characters follow clues and find the truth/evidence.
It's an easy watch. The pace is fast and the chemistry between cast is good. I don't like the cutesy act the FL puts on, but it's not overly annoying. They rush the ending way too much, but aside from that, this is a good distraction for fans of costume detective dramas.
I just finished episode 29. I like that the current case has to do with ML's past, but there are less than 10 episodes left. They are only about halfway to foiling the main villain - with 2 helpers and ties to the west xia kingdom mentioned but still unknown. I don't see how they can finish the whole story...
Started this while waiting for episodes of Zhan Zhao adventures and Tang Mist. The first episode has Old Fei , Ma Mung and the abbott from strange tales of tang dynasty! Kind of makes me more excited for this show :)

I really like the ML too, though I think the supporting cast are a bit weak. All in all, it's shaping up to be a great watch
