I liked it but didn't love it . I enjoyed Park Seo Joon's Min Sung, even with his bad decisions (the poor guy obviously had PTSD) and he's the stand out of the movie for me, but Joo Myung Hwa was terribly frustrating and unimpressive. No character was particularly likable, even the young girl. Visually speaking the movie was really good, the earthquake scenes and the landscape afterwards were haunting.
I felt the writing was a bit messy after the first half, like characters were acting inconsistently. They spent some time to build a good partnership between Mu Chan and Joo Hyun, but then that sort of fizzled out and they barely interacted in the last few episodes. Most irritating character goes to the younger sister, along with the congresswoman and her RBF secretary. The one plot twist that still managed to surprise me a little was the prison guard being Gaetal number 3. I wish the ending weren't so open, given ratings were bad and most likely there won't be a season 2. At least I was expecting the congresswoman to be out of the picture for good.
Tbh Episode 10 had me really frustrated...it's so unlike Mokha to ditch Ki Ho and his family like that. I know Ki Ho told her not to keep in touch because it would be a distraction, but come on...they're both being noble idiots, but hopefully this doesn't require a huge time jump to resolve. The most annoying character (next to the evil father) to me is Yoon Ran Joo, who keeps emotionally manipulating people. I hated how she called Ki Ho just to make him overhear her conversation with Mokha. At this point I don't really care about her storyline anymore.
My theory about the brothers and Woo Hak's amnesia....in the longer trailer they showed human remains getting pulled out from a car in the river, and I'm thinking that's Woo Hak's family and the reason he lost his memories. It could be that their "accident" was caused by the male lead's dad, or maybe it's unrelated (TW------------------------ I'm thinking possibly a murder suicide like in one of this writer's previous dramas) , but Ki Ho/Bo Geol (I'm 200% sure it's him), his mother and stepfather took the son who survived in, most likely in secret as the bodies haven't been found yet and that means the accident wasn't reported. The two guys are the same age. Maybe it was going to be hard to forge documents making the boys twins or 10 months apart and probably it was even more convenient making Bo Geol one year younger to protect his identity.
I think the culprit made the second ring as a guarantee, so in the case the police found the girl's body it would lead them directly to blame Kim Do Ha again. I feel like with the brothers it's a case of "keep your friends close and your enemies closer", because as long as there was no evidence of murder, they not only provided an alibi for Kim Do Ha, he also became their alibi. And working together for the last five years gave Jo Deuk Chan the opportunity to keep an eye on him and gaining his trust more, while also making money on him. I actually wonder how close Jo Deuk Chan and Kim Do Ha were back then, if he truly cares about him tbh and if that may be the reason he likely killed Eom Ji...
I never have second lead syndrome, but Lee Kang Min's sad puppy eyes are killing me... Fingers crossed I'm wrong and the drama doesn't become so predictable, but watch it be Syaon who jumps in to save Do Ha and gets stabbed instead, forcing him to stay by her side. She's just so unlikeable, ugh.
I really really liked the drama, but honestly I'm a little sad about the ending, because I wanted both of them to remember everything they went through together. Their journey was what made me love this couple so much and they don't really feel the same without that experience.
I rated this an 8 just because of the good music and stunning cinematography, storywise there was a lot of wasted potential and frustration. I think the found family scenes, that literally took up half episode every week, are what ruined this drama for me. Once the relationships were established and everyone started living together, they should have focused on the thriller/horror aspects of the plot. I really enjoyed those bits where they were hunting down the monsters. Instead we got way too many useless scenes of people eating/bickering/moving house multiples times. I'm not happy with how they wrote the two younger characters, I feel they were just dragging everyone down, by getting kidnapped, put in harm's way and they needed saving most of the time, almost more than the typical fl. Basically everyone was babysitting them . Also, for me they barely had any chemistry with Lee Jin Wook. And don't get me wrong, I think Gong Seung Yeon is a decent actress, but the character was boring. She had more chemistry with other characters. While I'm ok with the romance not being the focus of the drama, it could have been developed better and a little sooner, especially considering it was at the very core of how everything started. So I really liked the final scene between Sang Woon and Hwal in the forest (and their "reset" in the future). I wish we had more of those charged moments between them. Applause for Lee Joon who was just effortlessly mesmerising in this role.
So much wasted potential with this drama. They spend half of every episode on the "family bonding" (like, we get it, they're Hwal's reincarnated family, you don't have to remind us every five minutes) and reveal barely any information on the past, just crumbs. The drama is good when it's dark, the leads fight against other monsters or Ok Eul Tae is in the scene. I'm also liking the budding romance (wish it had come sooner), but the rest is meh. I feel the two lead actresses are criminally underutilized and their characters are just bland.
This drama seems to be very polarizing For me, I read the negative reviews before starting it (being this one of my most anticipated show this year), so I was all ready to be disappointed, but in the end I really liked it. The only thing that bothers me is not knowing for sure if Netflix will produce a season 2.

I can already see some changes compared to the webtoon, but it's not a bad thing.

Thumbs up for the Goblin throwback, I love Lasse Lindh's songs.
