this was such an underrated gem! sadly due to not having high traffic actors or decent promotion, many people will miss out on this drama or give up early because they find it too silly. i personally enjoyed it a lot.
i think it has one of the better portrayal of healthy dynamics/relationships between characters in awhile whether it was romantic, friendship or familial. interactions felt wholesome and non toxic. there was no love triangles or annoying second leads. they had an actual purpose in the story. of course it wouldn't be a romance drama without misunderstandings, miscommunications and/or noble idiocy and this was no exception. it was certainly a frustrating aspect that had me screaming at my screen but the acting and chemistry was amazing and so was the skinship. it felt really natural. i loved majority of the characters and how they were written. what i found refreshing was even when the male characters were being a noble idiot, their female counterpart was strong and determined to not let that get in the way of being together. wanting to protect the other even at the expense of sacrificing yourself is one of the most selfless act of love that one can do and it was so heartwarming to see.
there was a good balance between angst and comedy and moments that will have you smiling and kicking your legs in the air because it was too ridiculously cute. on the surface, it may seem like a romcom but it was actually a lot more complex which i was pleasantly surprised by. every time i thought i understood where the direction was going, it proved me wrong. i have to commend the writer for throwing me off the loop. it was clever albeit confusing and definitely unexpected but in the end, i believed it really placed the emphasis of one's fate.
it's easy to watch and move on but it takes a special drama to really sit down and vent about your thoughts and feelings. i had fun every week dissecting what happened especially when discussions was so limited. was this a masterpiece by any means? no but it had a certain charm that i fell for. everyone's experience is different so i won't guarantee you will feel the same as i do but for me, it was a rollercoaster that i happily rode on. i'm really going to miss them so much.
okay this is my detailed interpretation of the ending. my initial reaction was confusion and anger but after calming down a bit, my thought process is more rational. whether or not it can be considered a happy, sad or open is up to the viewer depending on what aspect of the story you choose to believe.
1. he dies from his injuries and removes her memory as if all the events never happened. the rest of the characters' fate are changed but on the romantic side, the couples still had a positive chance of being together. happy for the characters as they wouldn't be suffering from the guilt or pain but as a viewer, this would have been a bittersweet ending for sure especially everything they've been through.
i think that if wei qi had told zhou yuan about him deciding to take the consequences of the effect from her absorbing powers MUCH earlier then everything after wouldn't have been so complicated. i like to believe they would have found a solution that doesn't include someone sacrificing themself and the unusual talents can finally live their life as an ordinary person. everyone can be at peace knowing there won't be a threat to them anymore.
after the death of xue deng, it was revealed that a new person with an unusual talent has appeared. wei qing's son with the rare ability to travel through time. it left me the question of who was the father that passed it down but of course there wasn't a direct answer. pei yin had used the same ability to go back to see wei qi's fate but it remain unchanged. now my next theory is he's the adult version of the son LOL. it wasn't the case but might as throw that twist in there to make it interesting. i guess they just wanted to make him aware that fate is indeed crazy and the burden of having those powers.
2. it was a long and vivid dream only wei qi and zhou yuan witnessed. they woke up to the "real" world with their memories intact. powers don't exist. ning lan and lin yan still with their bickering dynamic but hinted romantically, li mian and xing yue lowkey 🌈 👀❓ (her asking if zhou yuan is pretty/in good shape + him not being interested in "other women" was sus). zhou yuan is a princess of the royal family. she sent her assistant (revealed to be in the form of cui ying) to wei qi and shared a story.
she stated that a long time ago, there was a princess who realised she has more than one life. every time she went to bed, she would dream about her alter self. all the events that happened was true leading up to the moment when wei qi died and she woke up living like a walking dead. until one day she fell into a long sleep and reached a different world through her dreams. a world without powers where everyone's fate was written differently. she remembered everything but she was still early (because she was still a child) and had to wait more than a decade to find the one she's been searching for. this is the part where it's more confusing than it needed to be but my theory is that because their fate has always been tied together, their destiny was to meet each other even if it took a century (hence reincarnation). i did like how they mirrored their "first" meeting where she fell into his arms, only this time he fully embraces it. finally, they could be together.
pei yin telling xing yuan about the disaster that would have happened to her village 100 years later. so if those events were from the future, it makes sense why he travelled there to prevent it from happening. although the future has changed, people's fates are still tied together. a kind of hopeful and meaningful message.
3. the ending scene - everything was a fictional story written by wei qi (which would have been a real kick in the teeth knowing they never existed and i got emotional over nothing). alternatively, he turned what they really experienced into a novel.
and that concludes my essay. overall, it was certainly an unexpected ending. not really a bad one in my opinion but i have to give credit to the writer for making me use my brain.
*googles* how do i become a towel?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ9maaXzj1U
not youtube attacking me with this when it's been a good amount of time of me not thinking about the drama but this just proves the brainrot is alive and well
AHHHHH THE WEDDING WAS SO BEAUTIFUL THEY LOOKED GORGEOUS 🥰🥰🥰 their smiles and pure joy could not be contained, love that for them! of course it wouldn't be this drama without its funny antics. zhou yuan in the bridal chamber waiting and wei qi being tortured by the unusual talents but nothing will stop him from getting there 💀😂 and then her coming to save him. but plz can we just let them do it without the other being influenced by alcohol??? the scene when he did her hair was such a small but lovely detail and really showcased how observant and kind he is as a person especially knowing he learnt it from his sister. "so many shortcomings but i love you. i love everything about you." giggling and kicking my feet fr ❗❗
li mian wanting to spoil xing yue and saying all she needs to do is eat well and he'll give her whatever she needs, him achieving happiness from just accompanying her throughout life... hey god it's me again 😔🙏
oh so pei yin was married to head cui's sister but she passed away. he was saved by the tribe leader and promised to return but he couldn't. i guess my theory of him being zhou yuan's father was wrong since the timeline doesn't match. welp what a shame. i really thought i was onto something.
ning lan not wanting to use his powers on lin yan but her assuring him it's okay to do it. another small detail i love. consent is indeed everything. i feel so sorry for her having a horrible father but i suppose someone has to be the bad guy since there hasn't really been a "big" villain.
feeling frustrated wei qi still hasn't told zhou yuan about his injuries. she apologised for the lies she told at the beginning, now it would be great if it was his turn. she better make him grovel for it with a healthy dose of ass kicking too. 😃👍
i explained the plot in one of my comments below! but essentially she's the girl who saved min hui from suicide and was the first love of xin qi. since she's not mentioned or in the cast list, i believe they've omitted her from the story and so the drama will be slightly different from the novel.
tbh given cdramas have the tendency to take forever to release, the fact this only took 8 months after shooting has finished is great. so happy it didn't take long to see our babies again.
