Bullied Daughter-in-law by day, legendary sniper by night
Yu Bona could not ask more for a family she never had growing up - a super-clingy and loving husband, a cute and cheeky toddler daughter, a helpful sister-in-law, heck she even cherished the mental abuser of a mother-in-law, all because they are those she never had as a child. There are nothing in the world she would trade them for, and she is certain she never have to. Until her reporter husband Kwon Taesong and police detective friend of his Dongjin start homing in to Kingfisher the moment she springs into spotlight again 4 years after going hiatus. Because Yu Bona is Kingfisher, the legendary sniper that took Korea by storm since the last 15years by shooting criminals who got off with light/unmatched sentences to the crimes they committed with one bullet to the head. One shot one kill. With a whole team of experts, Kingfisher has been carrying out vigilante works in the dark, staging accidental deaths for some criminals and one shot to the head for others. When the going gets tough, only the strong survives. Yu Bona realizes the moment where she would have to choose between her family and her career of making the world a better place has arrived when old “friends” from her days in Russia come knocking on her door, while she dabbles between slipping through the police’s grasps and eliminating unrepented criminals before they get to their next target.
Honestly Yu Bona would not have been my favourite character even if she is the most badass of all, because her weakness of swallowing every single insult and verbal abuse by her mother in law just doesnt sit right for me. But even though i did not like this side of her, I know this little passiveness and patience is what makes her more human than the average superhero roles, a weakness that makes her role less than perfect. Despite the weakness for her MIL, i totally love her wit when facing her peers, the mothers at her daughter’s kindy, her colleagues and her friends from Russia. I am in love with her team, husband and sister in law. They are the gems that made this story colourful and less depressing, as Yu Bona’s backstory is indeed one of the grimmest of all.
The plot basically covers two very distinctly different parts, the action which involves the criminals and police, and the sentimental which involves the relationship with her husband, in laws and the past life she left in Russia that went very deeply. Despite the many sentimental arcs, i find the storyline very well written and not boring or corny at all, unlike how Family:Unbreakable Bond was written which i fastforwarded most of the family interactions scenes. Here I could really feel her loneliness and melancholy, Kwon Taesong’s deep love for his wife, the sister-in-law’s genuine kindness and admiration for Bona, and the bottomless irritation by her MIL that later turned into unwavering support for her, all thanks to her years of patience in dealing with her MIL. None if it was boring. I am impressed cuz I am not typically patient to sit through in-law drama and corny romance.
It seems ever since I binged Taxi Driver S3 earlier this year, i keep coming across kdramas with excellent execution of second language, in this case Russian. In my opinion, Russian is definitely not one of those easily vocalized language unlike English, so I commend the effort of the actors. Now my impression of korean actors has totally shifted. It turned out some of them could really make an effort to learn to deliver their non-korean lines perfectly well, I just havent seen them before Taxi S3. Kudos from me.
The action is to drool for, am very impressed of the sniping and streetfight choreographs here. I binged this in less than 48hours, which means I can’t take my mind of off it throughout the duration. Very well executed, i approve! Honestly the rating wouldve been higher had the soundtrack been more memorable and ear-catching.
