Interesting Acting, Predictable Plot
Cho Yeohwa lived for 15years as a virgin widow to a husband she never met as he went missing on their wedding day presumed to die of bandit attack. As the daughter in law of the Left Chancellor’s household, she is expected to uphold the highest virtue as a woman, to stay loyal to her dead husband and mourning him for every single day for the rest of her life, never seeing the outside of the household’s wall. Little that other people know, Cho has been jumping the walls at night as a masked vigilante doing robin hood-like deeds to help the common people in need. Coming from a military family, unbeknownst to anyone else except her attendant Yeoseon and the Grand Merchant, Cho actually possesses exceptional martial and sword skill that has been put to use on her nightly adventures. Her outings have always been smooth until she encounters Park Sunho, a newly transfered captain of the city garrison at a gambling den. Captain Park starts pursuing the masked man as his curiosity deepens by the revelation that it had been a woman. Cho realizes the encounters with the young captain jeopardizes the exposure of her identity as a minister’s widowed daughter-in-law which may disrupt her investigation into her brother’s disappearance 15years ago during the death of the late emperor. While trying to evade pursuit, the two lost souls finally come to a realization that they are actually on the same path of finding the real culprit behind their family’s disappearance and demise and decide to work hand in hand to uncover the truths that happened more than a decade ago.
First off, coming from her first drama that I saw which was One The Woman, i gotta say that Lee Hanee definitely looks better in costume drama than in a modern one. And her dimples and smile are so cute to look at despite her mature look. She’s also giving off the fun, easygoing aunty vibe a kid would love to hang out with. As for her character, she’s playing a dual personality that is the submissive, gentle, loyal Cho Yeohwa who dedicated her days and nights praying and mourning for her dead husband’s soul, and the masked vigilante whose physical skill can rival the average royal guard let alone the local thugs. I couldnt help but feel that this role is very similar to Jo Yunjo’s that she played in One the Woman, complete with the excessive facial expressions and her korean dialect that she uses. It’s a unique attribute that I don’t usually see on kdrama, although I cant say i am an avid kdrama fan. I dont “love” love her, but her acting definitely caught my eyes.
As for the actor who played the male lead Park Sunho, i keep seeing chinese actor Tian Jiarui everytime he comes on. What an uncanny resemblance. Although this role is a captain of the city garrison, he realizes he may not win against the masked vigilante, not simply giving in because he fell for the FL. Although I loce seeing their banters, i failed to see them as a couple cuz the actor looks too young for Lee Hanee’s more mature looks. They look like brothers and sisters at most.
The romance is very slow burn as the FL is more objectively-driven to unravel the truth of her brother’s disappearance than pursuing romance. She actively rejects ML’s advances even after she freed herself from the bond of marriage because she doesnt want to be bound to men for survival, a resolution to which I respect. The ending offers an open ending to their romantic entanglement which I also like.
The action and conspiracy plot is average. There is not much twist so don’t expect mindblowing unpredictable arcs. It’s a fun action comedy to watch, but not really memorable enough.
