LoL, I think not many chinese dramas that had plot like your mention. Also in this drama FSF is not the male lead, the male lead is Xiao Wu.

I think the better one is from the 2016 version as the ost they used from 83 song, also for the guo jing, but not li yitong acting as huang rong, i always feel li yitong acting OTT in every dramas (that's why i rarely finished her drama)

For me the TVB at the 80's was the BEST Jin Yong Adaptation. Except for the Laughing in The Wind, I like the 1996 with Jackie Lui, it was better then Chow Yun Fat version.

That's not random korean scenes. If you searching, there's a place in china near North Korea called Yanbian Autonomous Area, where the korean descendant live. So I think FZW is korean descendant lives in China because Yanbian his hometown.

About FZW, I remember know about the term "Phoenix Man," meaning the poor guy from rural area, succeed in the big city. But those Phoenix Man always put the family at village above his own family eg his wife and child.
This drama made me remeber about a case in china where the wife got murder by her mother in law. they live in the same house,where the house bought by her parents as gift, her MIL
so jealous and toxic, but her husband always defend his mother. The backstory really reminds me of this drama, they met at university where the both studying the postgraduate, also both are professor teaching in the same university. The girl choose him because he looks honest and kind, even her parents not approved her decision to married him. After the murder, the MIL got jailed for few years, but only got released after the son appealed to the court for health reason cause the MIL diagnosed cancer, so the evil MIL can live happily with her dearets son and her new daughter in law. Oh, the wife parents got threated, if they not agree with the MIL release, he will not let his ex in laws to see their grandchildren. The husband got extremly bright career at the university. IN REAL LIFE THERE ARE SOME MANY CASE LIKE HYM THAT HAVE TRAGIC LIFE AND UNFAIR. The Phoenix Man so toxic.
