Ok, final consensus. 7 years after the time that Suhyeon left - 7 years past any point where Da On had any indication of feelings for Suhyeon ( and in fact has a blatant dislike of him, telling Jaemin to stay away from him for his own safety), Jaemin turns Da On down because he's not convinced that Da On can love him. Despite Da On being blindly in love with him for the last 7 years and even before.
I'm basing this off of the "you know why" that Jaemin says to Da On after Da On asks Jaemin this exact question. Why he didn't say yes if he loves him. In other words, AM I EVEN CLOSE? Does anyone have anything even slightly more sensical to offer as an explanation for this?

It's interesting that you specifically say homosexuals. I'm glad that nothing about this series shows any indication that the toxicity of J and S had anything to do with them being attracted to men. It wasn't even about circumstances societally created that forces LGBTQIA people into the closet, forces them to hide themselves, denies them the right or ability to pursue love, to even hate themselves or their identity. This was an interesting study in humanity to say the least.

Just a passerby that is glad that with this show, it never pretends that the toxic love of J and S was a good or desirable. That it was something that a relationship could or should be built on.

So was Da On in love with Jaemin until Suhyeon came into the picture and he fell in love with Suhyeon and so Jaemin proposed to Suhyeon that they should pretend date, but I thought that would only work on Suhyeon because Suhyeon knew he didn't stand a chance against Jaemin in Da On's heart, but now it looks like that when J proposed the deal with S, Da On was in love with S, so then why would S agree with J? Because he still thought that Da On might like J amore than S? And ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, why didn't Jaemin just say yes when Da On confessed to him in the present? That seems like it would have been exactly what J would have wanted since we have established that J is obsessively in love with Da On. In the very same room where Da On confessed to him days before and J rejected him with so much vehemence that Da On avoided him ever since (out of a broken heart), Jaemin assaults Da On after admitting he's in love with Da On. WHAT IS GOING ON?!

Now on Ep 6 and I'm even more confused

And did Jaemin want those photos... because he wasn't content with just a platonic relationship with Da On? It was ... grating at him, you could say?

Does he maybe think that dating relationships aren't long term? And friendship with Da On would be more ... reliable? Does he feel like Suhyeon might still be a small threat, so this way is a more sure way of getting him out of the picture/off-limits (though it puts himself off limits, too)?

Ok, so what the F is up with Jaemin. I was finally settling on the hypothesis that he just wanted to be friends with Da On, but I just watched that conversation between him and Suhyeon, and I don't understand what he would get out of pretending to date Suhyeon. I know he's blackmailing Suhyeon into not dating Da On by saying that he could easily be with Da On (I'm guessing because he knows Da On is severely in love with him), but he won't if Suhyeon pretends to date him. So at that point, my understanding was that he wanted to keep Da On's friendship (devotion), but didn't actually want to date him, yet thought he couldn't keep the friendship if Suhyeon (somehow) convinced Da On to date him. But now I'm watching the scene where they're in the church (why a church) and Jaemin says to Suhyeon "you like him, TOO" and now it seems (from iQIYI's admittedly untrustworthy subtitles) like Jaemin is also in love with Da On, but if they both know how absolutely besotted with Jaemin Da On is, why isn't Jaemin dating Da On? For a moment there, I was like, OH! It's because of homophobia and he wants to hide that he's dating a man, but dating Suhyeon completely defeats that short-lived theory. So now I'm out of theories.

Also, Jaemin saying "it could have IT all by myself, but I shared IT with you" is so messed up.

She was also in love with him the whole time (since childhood)? Absolutely bulshi... I mean plot nonsense! She obviously fell in love with him after living with him and learning how much he loved her.
Also, Shindo was gay, right? Could I have wished him happy too? He could have turned around after handing out the balloons and come face to face with the love of his life! With someone... say Kento? Then they both could have had happy endings!
