Your comment really is the BEST example of how we can have a Topper Drama List and we will gel 100% with one on that list and have no connect on another.
I LOVED L&P to Death (watched and rewatched like one would play a fave song on loop). My heart quivers every time I recall the drama.
BUT I also went ALL GOOEY and LOVED the BEAUTY and delicate crafting of Hidden Love .. and Zhao LuSi and the ML .. It's sensitivity and ability to get into the mind of the FL .. the fine balance of pathos .. poignancy .. maturing .. ALL seemed like a perfectly seasoned and flavoured soul-soup. I havent rewatched it yet .. BUT it's there on the shelf .. for a calm day .. to again sip on with FULL pleasure. (I do know I'll not do a 3rd rewatch of it though ... I WILL rewatch L&P many many many many more times ;-p As I probably will TTEOTM and SOKP)

Lovers of this DRAMA were hooked for the quality of reading between the scenes / lines / glances / actions that were slickly provided for many many rewatches.
We are outsiders .. on MDL because of our love of Asian Drama .. and we have seen enough tragedy befall the artists of these countries (esp S. Korea??) to know that there is some systemic disease that is NOT BEING ADDRESSED.
Cancel Culture seems to have POTENT effect in this part of the world .. on Celebs :-(
happy ending was so happy that it ripened and overripened and then began to rot then stink .. Don't get me wrong I only dropped at the last ep when it truly stank .. but 60 % of the show I DID suck up the angsty twisty stuff

Although I watched the WHOLE drama .. usually I drop dramas when they become like this .. for some reason I couldnt - I think it was Wallace Chung .. he's NOT CLASSIC good looking .. but he has something so HOTTT I was not able to stop guzzling the scenes - even his character's TOXIC behaviour .. (he pulls off the toxic part of the role brilliantly though - he's a pretty good actor in the hands of a strong director with a strong script).
She was ALL DRIPPY LONDON half-hearted drizzle and bland sky .. the SUNSHINE was ONLY in the college FL role and actress. LYX stole the show with the portrayal of his character .. SO MUCH SO that when the Main couple re-did the roles in the last episode .. I dropped off .. It was SO SO SO BAD!!!! CHEESY CAPITAL
Why the show decided to flog the dead horse in the last 3-4 eps I have no idea.
But I'll confess I couldn't drop the show - because for a long while the 'angst-twisty drama' was SO FULL of promise .. because the characters weren't yelling and bitching and doing Black and White characters.
The SCRIPT lost direction and got hit by POVERTY of ideas .
It was the hair. Her brain cells were stored in her hair, and when they chopped it off, she lost half her IQ.
What disastrous WIGS they played with .. Why could she not just have her hair chopped for real .. and the PD team couldn't plan it around that ??
That's why the College FL role came off SO MUCH more refreshing and chirpy and TRUE sunshine filled .. she wasn't in a WIG.
And of course LYX .. goodness that took my breath away when I realised who it was!!
WHAT AN ACTOR .. the college days were for me the meatier part of the drama ... just for the actors and they characters as portrayed in that part of the drama.

Unlike you I was pulled into the story since the FL seemed like a superb actress.
And the Harem politics looked interesting in the beginning.
And then it started losing it's form .. the FL became BORING and dumb .. lost her sharpness. The King was ridiculous and unconvincing .. Xu Cai also unconvincing .. SO SO SO much "talking" SO SO SO much giving away the plot like we are dumb idiots who won't understand what is going on .. and SO SO many giveways BEFORE the reveal that you'd have to have only 3 brain cells left to NOT get what's coming from a mile away .. zero tension .. a whole load of irritation ..
I FFDed to the last 2 eps .. and was GLAD I didnt torture myself !!!
Poor Xu Cai ( he's cute looking BUT is a hammy actor .. flies only on his looks .. loads of good looking actors do that) met a denouement end .. that would be SO pissing off for many. Gimme a break!!

We all have our own Toppers List .. and sometimes some of those match while some don't.
SO would love some examples of the ones that swept you off your feet and you'd rewatch several times and still not get enough out of the show.
(Am sort of waddling in Drama drought sometimes .. and repeat watching my old faves .. wouldn't mind new reccos)
Only LLTG and TTEOTM and SOKP have tripped me up and held me enthralled each time.
