So unless this refers to Xiao Ling Chen as a child...

If you want to blame characters for that, Lord Wuxiang & YueQing are good candidates. They plotted everything.

Did you watch the animation(s)? I just peeked into "Great Journey of Teenagers" and it seems to make some improvements to the plot of TBOY.

It is not mentioned in the actual show, it's extra information provided by the subtitle translator after the episodes. So I guess it's from the novel or other external material.

Ok so Sky Beyond Sky = Sky's Beyond = Outerheaven = Tianwaitian people are from Beiqu. Beiqu is the former country, but it was lost to Beili in a war, when Beique & Western Chu & Nanjue attacked Beili together, and now Beili owns the lands of Beiqu & Western Chu. So near the start of Dashing Youth, YueYao and her maid go on a trip to visit some lands that were previously Beiqu, to see if the common people are having a bad life. They see that it does not really matter who the ruler is, only that it is a good country, and this is a big part of YunYao turning against war with Beili. She does not want people to suffer.

The Tianwaitian snow area is far north of the previous country, so it's a new area and quite inhospitable, and it's not nice to live there.


The Blood Of Youth drama has the backstory that Baili DongJun accidentally kills YueYao in the fight against Ye DingZhi & Tianwaitian. Baili DongJun wants to kill YueQing; YueYao dresses up as her sister YueQing; =>YueYao sacrifices herself to let her sister live.
In the Dashing Youth drama this does not happen; instead YueQing dies somewhere else and YueYao stays alive.


Ye DingZhi defeats the ruler of Tianwaitian (YueYao/YueQing's father) by taking his power and Baili DongJun's power*. This makes him the strongest person in Tianwaitian, so he is accepted as ruler. He then aggressively expands to absorb nearby tribes, and the whole thing becomes called the Demon Sect.

*: In Xunian Arts, you can take someone else's Xunian cultivation for yourself. This is why there is only usually one person alive who does Xunian Arts, even though in Dashing Youth there are four.

For me the voice dubbing is an issue in this show. I guess it's good to dub Lie Xue Yi when he is >30 and his character is 17, as maybe his real voice would not fit at all. But this show has dubbing crimes that you don't really see in Dashing Youth.


My own Golden List of the Ultimate Worst Voice Crimes in TBOY:

??th: Xiao Ling Chen. Unfortunately dubbed here, making him leave 20% the impression he does as Xiao Ruo Feng in Dashing Youth.

4rd: Fei Xuan. Another child actor with a 40+ years old voice actress, but it does not compare to 1st place.

3rd: Consort Xuan's maid. Every sound hurts.

2nd: Red Prince's minion Long Xie. The most horrendous voice in dramaland.

1st: Wu Shuang. 14 year old actor with 40+ years old female voice actress. Just WTF. Especially in the earlier episodes she sounds totally off; when he reappears near the end it's a tiny bit better (or the Long Xie voice actor had already eroded our sanity too far).

Xiao Chong is not a villain and has a good ending.

The Xiao Chong actor plays the future emperor (Chonghe's father Xiao Ruo Jin) in Dashing Youth. He could definitely be called a villain there.

In my TBOY subs, the extra info is given that he and ex-Langya officers were living a sea pirate life for the ~4 years before TBOY.

While watching The Blood of Youth, this guy absolutely killed me.

TBOY's emperor MingDe, who almost is a "cute caring father"? We learn in DY that he's a disgusting rapist who drugs the woman he allegedly loves so he can put a child into her.

TBOY's heroic sword deity Li HanYi? From a harmless smart child poking fun at her father she turns into a terminally angry violent teenager who lead a crusade to kill the most abused character YDZ. I can't imagine the tutelage of Nangong ChunShui leading to that.

Unpopular opinion:
The people who think DY is much worse than TBOY are the ones that watched TBOY first.
If you watch DY first, and consider its contents *correct*, there's an endless barrage of things about TBOY that are just *wrong*.
From simple stuff like character/actor ages to character motivations to the story overall.

Maybe I should have phrased it: is there an episode that has the most minutes spent on action scenes or anything else that would benefit from more and prettier pixels?

After Dashing Youth, which already is more like bad actors, Blood of Youth starts out with shockingly bad actors..

Edit: I would say Blood River has a tiny bit better acting than DY.

We're watching Dashing Youth at the moment. Should we do Blood of Youth next to better understand those characters and what happens with the DY ones, and then follow up with Blood River, or go full chronological and watch Blood River before TBoY?

Well he got bitten by the zombies on I believe both shoulders or upper arms, and then (later) during the fight blood flowed from his eyes. So this was implied as the blinding I guess? Linked to how he was raging out of control after.

If you count the wedding where he was absent and her clan got massacred as well as the ghost wedding when she was getting entombed with him, it's even four weddings. :D
