tldr: boring/uneventful, poorly explained, laziest side characters ever at least none of the characters were actively annoying, they were just all totally pointless
I guess the car filming wasn't dreadful (typically is in China) and there weren't a thousand product adverts in every scene? that's just "the absence of more bad stuff" level praise though.
The Viki subtitles aren't that comprehensive either, with a lot of on-screen text being untranslated or very much abridged; but then again a few of those on-screen documents are just generic AI output.
I'm confused about whether I should watch it or not because I'm getting bored of watching step-siblings-to-lovers…
On the plus side they're never really committed to the sibling thing (internally, even if they act it externally), unlike say Go Ahead. On the negative side, it's like the most dragged out and boring of the step-sibling-incest shows.
I'm curious, does anyone enjoy watching this at 50 frames per second? It feels so telenovela-cheap to me. I tried it for the first episode, and beyond seeing FL's acting in an even better light (like: better microexpressions at more framerate) it's just eerie.
its speed and love with a better + realistic script
About halfway in, I find it's more like the small worse lower effort cousin of Speed and Love (no budget = no car racing / crime), mixed with some Lighter & Princess (without any of the instant chemistry and an only 15% as good OST) and a completely random dash of Snowstorm's billiards stuff (but without going into any of it).
The plot definitely isn't intelligent so far, and their poor run down housing area is like the low-budget version of SaL's Thailand.
I'm 99.9% convinced that the plot they had prepared ended in ep 14 and everything from ep15 or 16 on was written…
Feels like the AI prompt was "now make it end in a coup to storm the palace and kill the emperor", since that's the most standard costume drama plot anyway.
I'm 99.9% convinced that the plot they had prepared ended in ep 14 and everything from ep15 or 16 on was written by AI ( https://mydramalist.com/795106-qi-meng-ling#comment-27264906 ). It's so bad, and really like a completely different show. Not only is it tonally off, but in those episodes there keep being flashbacks adding extra justification for the latest bunch of nonsense (usually in the style of adding new conversations to previous scenes).
Warning:From about episode 16 on, the writing is purely AI-generated garbage. Whatever this was, it didn't come…
... one of the more deserving, a murderous drug addict, is let off with no punishment and just moved off-screen into a new life. It felt like the censorship bureau called and said "you can't kill your husband and have a happy end later on!", or something like that.
This leads to the side effect that the FL is still married at the end of the show, but that's among the bottom 10% of the plot logic issues that arise.
Warning: From about episode 16 on, the writing is purely AI-generated garbage. Whatever this was, it didn't come from a human mind. If you've ever worked with AI on a creative project you will tell immediately.
Initially, it's impressively well produced for a short drama. The FL is really good, while the ML is totally wasted/absent here (little screentime and little presence). Wang LuYun does a very good job, whereas the actor playing the (later) mega-villain is comically bad. Tonally the first 2/3 are dark and revenge-y, then it becomes very unsteady starting with a Vincenzo-style comedy scene in ep 15 (and after that it's just all over the place). Romance is a decent bit more one-sided than in https://mydramalist.com/776871-qing-chuan but it's not like this is a non-romance show.
There's a lot of blood/violence in the process of killing all who deserve it, though for some reason...
The ML is super good. The FL is pretty decent. Everyone else is shades of meh. Until it decides to go kind of nowhere, it's incredibly entertaining (with a braindead story). Production is so-so; fighting scenes all bad and could just be deleted.
The FL did a better job than the comments here would make you believe. Unfortunately, the show is kind of meh overall, with only like 3 episodes at the start having some momentum. The ML's acting is about the only consistent highlight. However, that he is "the emperor" is too far beyond belief; at best he's the young master of a moderate household.
The best character, the FL's pet hedgehog, inexplicably disappears just in the middle of getting more screentime and presence. Maybe the actor had somewhere better to be. (The FL also, maybe, has a dog, who vanishes in the same way.)
The ending is total nonsense and the various main characters and their arcs are pretty poor too. There's side plots like starving peasants that are as forgotten as the (un?)fortunate hedgehog.
The modern streaming version seems to be missing a song (or multiple), as there's often lyrics in the subtitles but just a background music track for it. This doesn't help matters.
(At least, unlike the screenwriters, I didn't use any AI.)

The start is really good, and after that it's fairly decent.
The child actor in it is great btw.
