i fucking love this drama
i don't really write official reviews for dramas unless i absolutely hate them, but oh my days i loved this so much.the cinematography, the colour grading, the fight choreography, the story, the acting, the cgi, the whole visual identity... just ughhhhh. everything came together so beautifully. every frame felt so deliberate, almost painterly at times, and the action scenes were actually creative instead of just people flying around for the sake of it. idk why this wasn't a huge ass hit because i genuinely, genuinely loved it.
this HAS to be ju jingyi's best role. she's improved so much since Novoland and i don't even think it's close. Lu Wuyi is such a lonely character, and somehow ju jingyi's usually blank, restrained eyes actually became one of the character's biggest strengths instead of a weakness. you can literally FEEL the isolation radiating off her. and those last few episodes bro i was holding it together SO well until she completely broke down over Ji Ling. ughghibkfdnhhhjdfksbnlkdfjvbjnsdksnfabjndfiognidsnviabdf. i actually cried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
tian jiarui's Ji Ling was such an enigma for the longest time. i genuinely couldn't predict what he was going to do next, and i couldn't figure out where his loyalties or intentions actually lay. that's honestly such a rare experience in cdramas because most of them practically spoon-feed you every motivation and plot twist before they even happen. with this, i actually had to pay attention and think for myself. i LOVE plots that trust the audience enough to put the pieces together instead of explaining everything five times.
chen duling REALLY suits these mature 姐姐 roles. Wu Wangyan had such a calming, grounding presence that every time she appeared on screen, my eyes were immediately drawn to her. she's effortlessly charismatic without ever trying too hard, and she can really hold her own as a lead. she is such an amazing actress ughhh i love her so much.
zeng shunxi lowkey impressed me with Wu Shiguang because OMG he portrayed all of Wu Shiguang's conflicting emotions so well. he never made the character feel one-note, and you could genuinely see the constant push and pull between love, guilt, and grief.
the story itself was wonderfully complex, and i found it so refreshing not being spoon-fed every piece of information or every plot point. it trusted its audience, and that's something i wish more dramas would do. it never felt confusing for the sake of being confusing either!! it just let the mystery unfold naturally, and i was hooked the entire time trying to piece everything together.
i also loved how committed the drama was to its own visual style. it didn't just look pretty for the sake of it because the colour palette, lighting, costumes, and cgi all worked together to create this really distinctive atmosphere that made it stand out from every other xianxia/wuxia i've watched recently.
i think this director did a bloody good job. put him in a cage with zeng qing jie, fei zhenxiang, and guo feng, and don't let any of them out until they've made another ten dramas together.

ugh idkkk 😭 i had such high expectations from the trailer, but this looks bad TT who gave this director the job bro... what a waste of such high-calibre actors and gorgeous costuming.i'm constantly sitting there questioning why he chose to shoot a scene a certain way, or why he thought something was a good idea. i even looked through his previous work, and yeah... i did NOT like those dramas either 💀
- there are WAY too many camera cuts in every scene. it feels so amateur, and it's honestly distracting. the cuts aren't even smooth, and they make the blocking confusing. you'll get a close-up from one side, then a front-facing shot where you can clearly see where everyone's standing, and then the next cut suddenly makes it look like everyone's magically swapped positions 😭 it's genuinely awful visual storytelling omg.
- the lighting is so overpowering that it completely flattens everything. there's no contrast, no atmosphere, nothing visually interesting. everyone just looks washed out, and the colour grading is so dull. i genuinely feel like i've been catfished because that poster is communicating vibrancy and interesting lighting, but this is just straight buns.
- he decided to use AI for the intro and a bunch of other shots instead of using that budget to pay actual animators and artists who know what they're doing. idgaf what anyone says, using AI here just screams lazy and cheap.
- don't even get me started on the sound effects 😭 the jingles are literally the same stock sounds every mini drama/vertical drama uses. it makes the whole thing feel incredibly amateurish omgggg.
can we just get zeng qing jie to direct every drama from now on because holy hell 😭 the difference in quality between this and Provoke is actually insane.
I'm going to keep watching because I've been waiting for this since forever, but my hopes and dreams are officially in the gutter... I'm just going to treat this like any other mini drama... 😭

what the actual fuck bro this is literally just a vertical drama converted into a professional streamed drama?? i wouldn't be surprised to hear that fuckass water droplet sound effect...these episodes go so fast and yet so slow with absolutely no pauses that it is giving me whiplash. music just HAS to be blasting with no rhyme or reason every SECOND it 's actually pissing me off and exhausting me, we have pauses and silent scenes for a REASON!! i don't need ur AI ass stock ass music pounding my ears all the fucking time. it's making the drama feel low-budget and cheap and ik it's not because the costuming is great!>Ef,ekwnn i would enjoy this drama so much more if it weren't for the constant NOISE
all these characters do is aura farm and tensionmaxx bro like omfg and those stunt animations and shit are way too weird and smooth to be industry-CGI, it feels so AI ughhh I really want to like this drama but ahhhh i swear the creators think their audience is stupid bc i'm literally getting breast-fed information and then burped occasionally it's pissing me off
it's such a shame because i really do love the lighting, colour-grading, some of the story and a lot of the shots they use for the characters, especially with zhou yiran, because zhou yiran looks GOOOOOD in this drama like genuinely omfg i was blushing everytime he came on screen WHHAATTTTT such a waste of talented actors

Unfortunate Casting
I am so disappointed in whoever cast Ai Mi over Dai Luwa for this role. We should NOT be normalising having grown ass adults looking at TEENAGERS in any sort of way other than friendly or familial. I don't give a FUCK about "W-well, back in A-Ancient C-C-C-China!" because we are in the BIG 2026!!The way they blindsided Hou Minghao with this casting is morally disgusting as well. He signed the contract BEFORE they cast Ai Mi, and now HE has to face the backlash and is called a pedo and a creep. It is ABHORRENT.
Ai Mi should not be considered for ANY romantic roles until she is at LEAST 19-20 and this is coming from someone who is the same age as her. YES, idol costume dramas are popular. That DOESN'T mean that she should be paired with a GROWN ASS MAN.
It doesn't MATTER if there are no kissing scenes, because if we let them get away with THIS, they will push harder next time.
Aside from that, it's a well-done show with a lot of interesting shots, good costuming, and colourgrading.
The casting director let down the ENTIRE production and acting crew by casting Ai Mi--and Ai Mi's agency and her parents should be ashamed of themselves.
